PLASTIK ♺: NEW ALLCAPS MATERIAL

Plastik is a new sans serif typeface, moulded and milled from rounded grotesques, geometric letterforms, engraved lettering and the scent of machines still murmuring and spluttering on a Hannover factory floor.

Sascha Bente began the design process with extensive research into characters with rounded terminals, most notably Akzidenz-Grotesk Buch Round. From there, he began analysing and drawing typologies of rounded terminals, aiming to optically adjust each corner and ending to look even more round than a circle. Plastik juxtaposes dynamic details rooted in calligraphy with geometric forms reminiscent of CNC-machined engraving, and celebrates the synergy between imperfect human gestures and co-ordinate based, industrial precision. It finds rhythm by contrasting geometric circular letterforms against narrower grotesque proportions and simultaneously echoes references to Herbert Bayer’s universal alphabet, allowing Plastik to acquire a secondary Modernist-influenced aura.

The character set also includes a selection of widely used recycling symbols from around the world — a collection of tools for sorting, reusing and keeping things in circulation. ♵ ♼ ♺

Plastik recycles a carefully curated choreography of unused off cuts and discarded components that would have otherwise been left on the factory floor… not a single source is discarded!

NEW: PAC Display ⬛️ a custom typeface inspired by PAC NYC’s cubic architecture with a timeless New York flair. Referencing 19th century American Gothic type, such as our #acModernGothic, it was designed to be flexible enough to speak to any show yet distinct enough to become an iconic marker of the brand. Developed exclusively for PAC in partnership with @porto_rocha

Bandit in use for DEVADE: Prague Architecture Between Rigidity and Disco, a publication exploring Prague's architecture following the first decade after the fall of communism. Offering a critical look at a period of rapid transformation and documenting thirty buildings from 1989 to 2004 through archival and contemporary photographs, it traces the tensions between modernist traditions and postmodern exuberance. With bold headlines set in Bandit by ALL CAPS Type, it reflects the era's ambition with unbridled energy.

What happens to a serif in your pocket?

E-books became commercially viable in the 2000s with the appearance of specialised reading hardware like the Rocket eBook and SoftBook, followed by the release of the Kindle in 2007, which helped normalise large-scale e-book distribution. Early screen resolutions, however, were low. This led to a need for custom-designed serif typefaces.

On E-Ink, unlike on a conventional screen, a letter is formed by tiny microcapsules that hold black and white charged particles in fluid. An electric field pulls one colour to the top in each pixel to create the letter shape.

That changes the conditions for type; a serif drawn for print behaves differently on a screen, where curves can break and details are translated through the display grid. Society draws from the lineage and sources of letterpress, but translates details with digital rendering in mind. A serif for a readering society.

Society in use for @tinder, its first rebrand in nearly a decade by @porto_rocha 💌Tinder has partnered with @porto_rocha on a new brand identity built to speak directly to a new generation of daters. Channeling the voice of a witty dating columnist (think if Gen Z had a Carrie Bradshaw), the identity pairs a sharpened wordmark and flame symbol with a bold new serif (Society), and art direction that blends real dating moments with a wider visual language inspired by internet culture, pop imagery, and everyday scrolling.

Rather than smoothing over the contradictions of modern dating, the rebrand leans into them, giving Tinder a distinct point of view while keeping the door open to every outcome.

While designing Plastik, @sascha.bente explored rounded grotesques, geometric letterforms and engraved signage, drawing from Akzidenz-Grotesk Buch Round, early Normschrift handwriting models and the visual language of industrial production.

① AG Buch Rounded reference material: Otl Aicher’s ZDF Typeface proofs, proportional studies of other grotesk fonts (mainly Helvetica), communication with G. G. Lange and foil proofs of AG Buch. Found in phototypesetting archives of H. Berthold AG. Image courtesy of the German Museum of Technology.

② German children’s book Geschichten für kleine Leute set in 20pt AG Buch. Inspiration for initial sketches of Plastik by designer Sascha Bente in 2019.

③ Original drawings with hand-drawn corrections of Akzidenz-Grotesk Buch Halbfett Round (1976). Found in phototypesetting archives of H. Berthold AG. Image courtesy of the German Museum of Technology.

⑦ VAG Rounded commissioned in 1979 by Volkswagen AG. Designed by a team led by Gerry Barney and David Bristow, it features soft, rounded terminals. The original Reddit logo, designed by co-founder Alexis Ohanian, with customized version of VAG Rounded. This wordmark remained the primary Reddit logo from 2005 until the rebranding that went public to majority of Reddit users in 2018.

REUSE, RECALIBRATE AND REFINE. REPAIR, REFILL, AND RECYCLE.

Plastik expands upon the moment where industrial mass production meets the soft geometry of Normschrifft lettering models. Letterforms synthesize the confidence of mechanical engineering, with the naturalness of a pen nib, creating letterforms that feel exact without being rigid. In the lighter weights, characters are optically monolinear; seemingly milled directly from a CNC machine. As the weight increases, the contrast between horizontal and vertical strokes become more pronounced, and the shape language becomes more humanist; a visual echo to the original Akzidenz-Grotesk Buch Round drawings found during Sascha Bente’s preliminary archival research.

Although the structure is rooted in geometry and mathematics, Plastik resists the perfection of digital construction with an ease that feels as human made as it does mechanical. It finds warmth within precision and allows technical forms to communicate with an unexpected sense of familiarity.

Unsure if your Rhetorik(al) question is not ironic enough? Struggling to find the right punctuation to communicate your emotion?? Looking to sound passive aggressive in a work email, but don’t know how??? Hopeful that a text message to your date isn’t coming across too formal????

Unconventional punctuation marks have been around since the mid 1960s. Advertising executive and copywriter Martin Speckter invented the first unconventional punctuation mark - the ‘Iterrobang’ - in an attempt to pose both a question and communicate an exclamation, simultaneously. They fill(ed) a niche gap in-between post modern writing, concrete poetry and ascii-art, that has almost become fully defunct in the age of emoji.

Writers and linguists throughout the 20th Century have (sometimes successfully) proposed unconventional, or ad-hoc punctuation, in an attempt to communicate a nuanced emotion or feeling. Although almost all have never been either formalised or adopted by the mainstream, some typefaces, such as Richard Isbell’s ‘Americana’ (Figure 1), include unconventional punctuation marks (in this case an Interrobang) within its core character set. Figure 5 even showcases Americana interrobang, produced in metal type. There are also cases where typewriter companies would provide instructions on how to punch in a combination of keys to prove grammatical pomp (Figure(s) 2+3). Figure 5 exhibits the proposed interrobangs from ‘Type Talks’, (1962), as drawn by Jack Lipton, showcasing the level of detail and craft put into such special characters. Communicating emotion through social media or via text message is now easier than ever; whether you are spamming brain-rot GIFs to a friend, or CMD-C>CMD-V’ing a badly drawn, clipart ‘Smiling Ball’ emoji (figure 6) to a work colleague.

• Interrobang: Combination of question and exclamation.
• Percontation Point: A rhetorical question
• Authority Point: Conviction in an answer or order.
• Exclam Commar: Excitement without fully completing a sentence.
• Friendly Period: Lightening the tone of a sentence.
• Love Point: Affection and positivity.
• Question Comma: Questioning without fully completing a sentence. by @allcapstype
