A man whose pioneering rhythmic and stylistic influence will be felt for generations - Tony Allen is perhaps the most legendary artist to have ever performed at St James the Great. Today, we are honoured to share ‘Never (Lagos Never Gonna Be The Same)’, recorded live at Church of Sound in March 2020. Tragically, Tony Allen’s performance with us was his last before his untimely passing.

While we’re excited to be able to release such an important historical recording, we feel a great responsibility to honour his legacy in an appropriate manner. We’re extremely lucky and deeply grateful to have hosted Tony while he was still here, though we cannot help but also feel a heavy sadness that his last performance was with us. Particularly poignant is the fact that ‘Never…’ is a song originally written by Tony and Hugh Masekela about the void felt in Lagos following the death of Fela Kuti, their long-time friend and collaborator, and it was performed for us all on that night in March 2020 as Tony Allen’s final encore.

RIP Tony Oladipo Allen | July 20th 1940 - April 30th 2020

‘Never (Lagos Never Gonna Be The Same)’ is out now and Clapton Hymns Vol. 1: 10 Years of Church of Sound (2016 - 2026) is available to preorder.

‘Rejoice’, the classic special collaboration between @allencodrum and @HughMasekela, will be reissued on orange, pink and white splatter vinyl to celebrate 40 years of World Circuit Records.

Having first met in the ’70s through their respective close associations with Fela Kuti, the two world-renowned musicians talked for decades about making an album together. When, in 2010, their touring schedules coincided in the UK, the moment presented itself, and producer Nick Gold took the opportunity to record their encounter.

Shortly after the very sad passing of Hugh Masekela in 2018, and with renewed resolution, Tony Allen and Nick Gold, with the blessing and participation of Masekela’s estate, unearthed the original tapes and finished recording the album in summer 2019.

Tony Allen JID018.

@allencodrum. One of the most influential drummers who ever lived, in a room at Linear Labs in the summer of 2018 with @adrianyounge. Eight original songs, 100% analog, straight to tape.

The founding father of Afrobeat, who built the rhythm alongside Fela Kuti and spent a career folding Yoruba polyrhythm, highlife, jazz and funk into a groove that still moves everything it touches.

The 18th installment of the Jazz Is Dead series, and one of the last records he made.
