A little bit later gram: my mom came to CDMX for el dia de los muertos. We hit all the ofrendas, the zocalo, the parade and of course a lot of traffic. Most apropos for the scary season was the city’s solution for the traffic—the cablebus—with aerial views of the largest cemetery. We could see all the mausoleums adorned with cempasuchil and paper picado from way too many feet in the air. Life and death separated by a thread (that we’re all barely hanging on by). And we all wore seasonal black in an unplanned family photo. Hang in there 🤙 taken in Ciudad De México by @allielikesyou

Desierto de los Leones is, ironically, a woodsy and mountainous region, prone to cold and damp weather and the occasional pack of wild dogs but no lions. An odd title unless you’d like to avoid people, in which case, this Winterfell-esque wonderland and former hermitage is an early branding success story. Located within the limits of one of the largest cities in the world I can safely say there are way more mushrooms than people. Construction began in the early 1600s and while the main convent remains beautifully intact several outlying structures and walkways are being slowly devoured by moss. As we wandered through 400 years of history to a network of hiking trails, I must’ve whispered wow a thousand times. Rish and Uma for scale. taken in Desierto De Los Leones by @allielikesyou

I crossed the northern border to wish Shari a happy 40th, hug beloved friends and swim with turtles (while Rish stayed safe at home). Texas sure is pretty y’all, maybe we can make it Mexico again.

My mom, Rish and I spent several days, often in giant hats, negotiating the hilly cobblestone streets that are common in Mexican pueblos. This town is oozing with touristy charm and I loved every minute of it but my favorite excursion was to an Otomi temple (540 AD) outside of the city. Researchers believe the temple was built to align with the cycles of the Sun, the Moon and Venus and excavators found a mummified woman, baring scars from battle, who died hundreds of years before construction laid to rest at the top of the stairs near the stars. The Zumba class in town was epic too. taken in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato by @allielikesyou

Julie “Mezcalita” Mond spent 10 exciting days with us indulging her senses and even some vices (sin hielo) in the city and at the beach. We shopped and ate and strolled and swam, avoiding the usual pitfalls: moctezuma, dengue, drowning, et al. Plus a heroic 1.5km sprint (with luggage) along a hot highway in Oaxaca after a cement truck flipped and blocked all traffic to the airport. Covered in sweat and lucky fairy dust (powdered concrete) we boarded our flight on-time-ish. Thanks for being an irrepressible sport Jewelsie! Nos vemos muy pronto 💎 taken in México by @allielikesyou

Thanks to my Mom I have a new favorite form of transportation - the TuriBus lol. I’m no longer sure why I avoided it but I’m surely hooked now. If you’d like to float two meters above the traffic, ogle architecture and brake for tacos, I’m here’s let’s go taken in Ciudad de México by @allielikesyou
