the tragedy of mary, martha, lazarus came into my life almost two and a half years ago, and i knew immediately i wanted to be a part of the project. from dramaturgy research into directing this, to see the show make its way outside of zoom meetings and carson’s apartment is gratifying in a very huge way for me.

the tragedy of mary, martha, lazarus has been about a lot of things to me. in this iteration, the show became about the american misappropriation of religion, labor and belonging. it has always been, however, a show about what it’s like to have siblings, what it means to have a family, and what it’s like to lose your faith. in that, i’m reminded of a quote from a cameron crowe interview with joni mitchell from 1979: “the word ‘art’ has never lost its vitality. it still has meaning to me. love lost its meaning to me. god lost its meaning to me. but art never lost its meaning. i always knew what i meant by art. now i’ve got all three of them back”
