We have (partially) entered the production period for Shape/Shift! 📸As our readers finish up and our editors get started, we wanted to share some of our image-based inspirations as the issue develops, curated by SFC Assistant Curator Omar Garcia (@o.marrrrrrrrrr ). Shape/Shift is set to be our most image-driven, photography-heavy issue yet!
📖Stay tuned; we’ll be sharing excerpts and sneak peeks through November. by @samefacescollective

Our theme for Issue 18 is SHAPE/SHIFT. This fall/winter, we are exploring sites and manifestations of change. How does your environment change you? Is there pressure to transform/adapt/assimilate? What is frightening about change? What is intriguing? Explore this theme however you’d like. We are especially interested in experimental forms, fragmentation, and magical realism. We will tell you more about our inspirations in the coming weeks, but for now, here are a few of our references:

The Metamorphosis / Franz Kafka
Our Wives Under the Sea / Julia Armfield
The Sympathizer / Viet Thanh Nguyen
Chameleon Street (1989) / dir. Wendell B Harris, Jr.
Black Girl (1966) / dir. Ousmane Sembène

Remember: We have updated our submission email address and guidelines. Please refer to our website before you submit!

Also, welcome our new curators, Ally ( @allisonm_b )and Omar (@o.marrrrrrrrrr ) by @samefacescollective

📸4/10 from Fatemeh Fani's incredible project "Erasure."
🧷From the Project Statement: "Erasure is rooted in my traumatic experience as an Iranian woman, where even a single strand of hair can mean life or death. Through repetition, the image connects to countless women who feel the need to conceal their identities. Dedicated to the millions forced to wear the Hejab for over 40 years, this work stands as a protest, a resistance, and a beacon of hope."
📖Check out the rest of the project on our website, featured in Issue 18 SHAPE/SHIFT.
⭐Fatemeh Fani (b. 1992) is an MFA student in photography at UW-Madison. Born in Iran, she currently lives in the United States. Fatemeh is a documentary photographer, researcher, and activist, with her research focusing on women, sexual minorities, and immigrants to express how in traditional societies such as Iran, these groups are deprived of fundamental rights and freedom of expression. As a recent woman immigrant to the U.S., she is documenting the essence of America through the lens of an outsider from an Islamic country with a distinct cultural background. Fatemeh is also working on personal archival photographs, aimed at challenging the concept of mandatory hijab and the stolen identity and humanity of Iranian women. Her intention is to raise awareness and draw attention to the prevailing restrictions, exclusions, and discriminations that affect a significant portion of her country's populace, with a particular focus on the challenges faced by women. by @samefacescollective

Whew. Issue 18 is out! We are so lucky to have the brilliant collection of work. To all of our contributors: THANK YOU. 🌫️ Shape/Shift is linked in our bio, but we look our best on a desktop or laptop computer! Especially since this is such a visual-heavy issue, we encourage to experience it on a larger screen.
🩻If you need background music, check out one of our playlists via Substack; an Apple music one curated by @vonnthepoet and Spotify one by @deannalwhitlow
