365 days with you.
We have orbited the sun. Ethan- you are a good man with a kind heart. What a privilege it is to love you and to be loved by you. You are my best friend, my boy, my love, mi amor, and my “oh my goodness” in Cantonese. Truly the last year has made me realize that there is a Lord of goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and kindness, and you helped me see that. I hope we can be like the moon and an astronaut.

I modelled professionally for the first time when I started university… before you read you must know that I share this story as a testimony of Jesus in my life.

I had always wanted to model.
The issue? Throughout high school I was insecure and I had a preconceived notion of beauty that I felt I could never fit. Once I began modeling it gave me a new confidence. I signed to an agency, modelled professionally, and collaborated in shoots. For once I didn’t hide behind insecurity.

Earlier during this past Fall semester I experienced a moment of pure fear, from this my acne worsened, my health got complicated, and I wept in fear for months. My acne didn’t make me unclean, my emotions didn’t make me broken; i was purely battling severe anxiety that tainted the way I viewed myself and this world. I hid behind makeup and a fake smile while I felt like I was crumbling into nothing.

It is now 6 months later. And I proclaim the work of the Lord in my life. He has showed me how to seek Joy again. With prayer, acne treatment, professional help, a new church, my girls Bible study, and finding gratitude, I have experienced a true testament of the Lord and His goodness. I am stronger spirituality, my acne is basically gone, I can walk out of the house without makeup and not feel awful, and I have a new hope and gratitude for a beautiful future. Don’t get me wrong, I still find myself weeping but I am reminded shortly after that there is a GOOD God despite fear and pain. I still wrestle in fear and anxiety, but I also know I have a loving God beside me at all times. And so I have gratitude for this unfolding testimony.

So half a year later I can step in front of a camera confidently again and make art.

“Standby” … the bystander effect

For this work I wanted to talk about something I find is not spoken about enough… The bystander effect. I remember as a kid I was called names and the response of others was “not much we can do.” And it wasn’t until I got older did I realize it was more than just watching others being called names. Today I’ve see how normal it’s become. Sometimes we find ourselves gossiping about others because it’s easier to just nod our heads in agreement than to speak up for what’s wrong. It’s as simple as recognizing that someone just needs to be seen or heard but choosing to ignore. The bystander effect is real and I hoped that this piece could encapsulate this term as awareness and to reflect the importance of supporting one another.

Grateful for my cast for their support and encouragement throughout this process and for their beautiful work on stage.
