A GAME OF CAT AND KILLER Written by Jiro Akagawa Translated by Haydn Trowell Grand Central Publishing @grandcentralpub Mysteries & Thrillers Make sure you pick up this fantastic crime fiction that is being translated into English for the first time. Released initially in 1978, Akagawa is beloved by many already. This is the first book in The Mikeneko Holmes series, and it follows Detective Katayama and the cat who chose to adopt him, Holmes. The story starts out with murder, of course. There is a prostitution ring and a corruption ring that have taken over Hagoromo Women’s College. Young women are dying in their rooms, and a prominent professor is found murdered in a locked room. Broken down into four parts, this story takes you on a classic Agatha Christie ride to figure out how the impossible has become possible. Over the past couple of years, I have learned just how much I adore Japanese Literature. It tends to have well-written emotional depth while being easy to read. This book is no exception. I’ve been reading a lot of Christie and Doyle, and Akagawa has earned their place right alongside them. I was able to figure out one of the twists, but there were so many more! This is the perfect book for Fall. Grab your warm coffee, a blanket, and settle in to binge this book and discover all of its secrets. Unfortunately, that was never in the cards for her. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a teen vampire book, and I immediately grabbed this one for the nostalgia! That said, I did not find the similarities to Vampire Academy or Twilight. Now, this may be because I was a bit of a Twilight hater- sorry, not sorry- but this book was so much better written. This book had real trauma and real tragedy. I can see the emotional depth from Vampire Academy, but don’t mistake this for a vampire book about academia because the crux lies in the relationships. You can feel the tension and depth in Hayden and Rose’s relationship. This book kept me glued to the page, and I was surprised time and time again. It’s giving modern-day Desperate Housewives. These are the women you hear about who have exclusive clubs and group chats. They’re devious and cunning and sometimes criminal. While this book leans more toward thriller, you can definitely tell that Gordon has a knack for writing horror elements. I got the same creepy feeling as watching Don’t Worry Darling, where everything just feels on the edge of cracking, and you can’t help but watch. These are the stories that stick with you because they’re based just enough on real life to unnerve you. It turns out that everyone is keeping secrets, but they may all come to light soon. This book has been compared to A Flicker in the Dark and The Luckiest Girl Alive, and these titles couldn’t be more apt. I’m a huge fan of thrillers, and this was one of the best ones I’ve read in a while. There are multiple POVs that come off as more unreliable with each new revelation. The twists and turns hit me at every turn. I found them all to be reliable, though, and not out of left field. The drama and suspense is definitely built on character unreliability. I love a paranormal read, especially when it has some type of adventure as well. Howie and Lucy are such a fun pair. Lucy despises everyone, including herself, and it shows. However, I still feel bad for her and empathize with her as she’s going through life. I read this book in no time because I didn’t want to put it down. While I had figured out a few of the paranormal pieces, there was a lot that I didn’t know. I also really enjoyed learning the historical parts that she spoke about with Peter. This was my first, but it won’t be my last book from O’Donnell. You have the same lovable characters with the perfect blend of humor and suspense, and this book goes to a whole new level with some very hard hitting subjects that often get ignored but need to be discussed more openly. I highly recommend this book and series to all readers. THE BLACK ORCHID By Loreth Anne White @lorethannewhite #KristinAtherton_Narrator Montlake / Brilliance @brilliancepublishing Fiction / International Suspense Personal assistant to a wealthy legendary war photographer, Poppy Buchanan was conflicted about the upcoming Mediterranean Sea voyage on the luxurious Black Orchid. The ship itself was everything she could have imagined but the vibe and interactions of the nine occupants within the five executive cabins was strained. As she struggled to sort out her place in the inter-relationships of the guests it seemed there was a destructive force at work along with the physical force of the weather that would control the resulting tragedy. White puts a twist on a locked room / closed circle novel by looking back from a documentary perspective which gives distance to the story while also making it front and center. My favorite of the characters was Carter, the eight-year-old grandson of FBI profiler, Dr. Gideon Marsh. Women, including one of her more enjoyable co-workers, begin to go missing. Brie refuses to let any of these events go until Luke finally relents and lets her join him. Now Brie is on the adventure of her life, literally, as she barrels into Hell with Luke to save not only these women, but potentially the entire world. I downloaded this book for the title. Full stop. What I got was one of my favorite books of the year. Brie is 27, but I can totally relate to the monotonous day-to-day work life where you’re just trying to get to the next day and wait for something exciting to happen. I love the way Reed writes Hell and all of the different characters and societies that live within it. I had never read anything by this author, but I’ve added the rest of their backlist to my TBR.
