Considering Angie and EJ are paranormal royalty, they are uniquely suited to investigate. When their new client brings demons to their doorstep, they will have to pull out all the stops to keep their city safe. Hunter pivots one of her long-running series into a new one with this title. I enjoyed Angie and EJ, but wished for a bit more on the magic and politics that the story relies on. Series narrator Khristine Hvam was excellent and her accent for Chattanooga, TN, felt spot on. Her cousin and best friend warned her the house was haunted but Fiona insisted on buying it. Fiona’s uncle was a writer so it wasn’t surprising to find a box of books published shortly before Uncle Tad had died. As she starts reading the book she quickly realizes the story is about the house and just possibly her family - just not a story she has ever heard. Reading the story sheds some light on her mother whom has always kept her at arm’s length and is not necessarily happy to see she has moved back into the house. Rimmer takes readers on a rollercoaster ride of family, security, loyalty, spousal abuse and gaslighting, with sides of violence and desperation. Uncle Tad and Fiona’s mother Ginny carry the story; it will stay with you long after The End. The narrator, Siho Ellsmore knocked it out of the park! When the cottage’s owner returns and changes the dynamic, Annie will start to figure out how to step out of being perfect and into being Annie. Wood has crafted a soft read that makes you think about who you are and what people around you expect. The dynamic between the three principals is fun and kept me engaged throughout. GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) identified five sets of remains in a mass burial ground in the Oregon state park. Indications were they had a serial killer to identify and a tender age child to locate so FBI Agent Max Rhodes, Noelle’s romantic and work partner, joins the hunt for this unknown evil predator who has more targets in mind. Elliot‘s third installment in the series functions well as a standalone alone novel but is great in the series. These characters are realistic, relatable and multi-dimensional. There are so many plot twists that keep you turning the pages or listening on, wanting to identify the culprit before Max and Noelle and help find little Belle. Parker voices this novel so well, you visualize every fear, every heartbreak, every healing. The ending was shocking, emotionally charged and heartbreakingly tender. I am so eager to find out what happens next with this group and to help solve another case. The encounter resulted in Anthony’s death with Jenny arrested and charged with his murder. While investing Jenny’s case, her friend from the police academy, Seattle Police Detective Tracy Crosswhite realized Anthony’s murder was somehow connected to the disappearance of fifteen-year-old Jackie Parker forty-five years ago and that solving Jackie’s disappearance is instrumental in Jenny’s defense. Dugoni’s latest Tracy Crosswhite is the first I’ve read in a bit, but it felt like slipping into a comfortable pair of slippers as I read. Having Emily Sutton-Smith as the consistent narrator for the series adds the feeling of chatting with a friend from days long past. Dugoni again includes tracking dogs. The small-town atmosphere, focus on family and friends, and memorable characters all combined for an encouraging and uplifting read. Alba, a gifted violinist, who was born with Chrono-Displacement Disorder, is a time traveler like her father. She involuntarily travels through decades, sliding or leaping between times in an increasingly dystopian world. She is in love with, and marries, two men—Zach and Oliver (a fellow time traveler), whose existence she keeps secret from the other. There are many surprises along the way. Alba has never lived her life in order so she wonders where she really belongs. In each chapter, Alba and her counterparts appear at different ages and in different situations which requires concentration on the nonlinear timeline. Some may find the depiction of the chaotic futuristic world unsettling; the vague rules of time travel a little jarring; I did not. I enjoyed this novel, which is well-written and compelling. She always does what she’s told, and she puts family above all else. On Halloween night, she has to miss out on her best friend’s party to keep her seven-year-old cousin. What Thulasi thinks is going to be a simple play date turns into the literal Halloween from Hell. They accidentally summon a group of monsters led by the infamous Addison Greer, and now they spend the night defying death and trying to put the world right again before they lose everyone they’ve ever loved. What a knockout for a debut novel. I picked this book up by title alone. Anyone who’s been in writing circles has heard that you have to kill your darlings more than once. Harish, however, takes it to a whole other level. Maybe you have to kill your darlings and also your heroes. I love a book set around Halloween, so I was already going in with high hopes, but what a fun read!! Thulasi is dealing with racism, high school, and now demons. As one of the only brown girls in the school, she just tries to keep people from noticing her. This book touches on this topic in such a nuanced way that is simple and easy to see while still keeping it light enough to be a fun horror novel.
