COSMETIC FORMULATION IS WEIGHT BASED NOT VOLUME BASED.

LIQUIDS ALL HAVE DIFFERENT DENSITIES. 1 ML OF WATER IS NOT THE SAME AS 1 ML OF GLYCERIN AND IS NOT THE SAME AS 1 ML OF OIL.

SAFETY ASSESSMENTS CPSRS PIFS AND GMP ALL ASSUME WEIGHT ACCURACY NOT KITCHEN STYLE MEASURING.

USING ML INTRODUCES INCONSISTENCY FROM BATCH TO BATCH WHICH BECOMES A COMPLIANCE AND QUALITY ISSUE.

There are SO many room spray recipes online telling you to add vodka, alcohol or witch hazel to water & essential oils.

But just because it’s all over Pinterest doesn’t mean it’s a properly formulated product.

Yes herbalist use alcohol as their base- are you a herbalist?

And witch hazel isn’t a solubiliser. It doesn’t magically make essential oils dissolve in water.

If you’re making room sprays to SELL, you need to understand what every ingredient is actually doing.

Because “I found this recipe online” isn’t a formulation strategy.

Formulate the product properly. Then sell it.

Let’s clear this up: honey, essential oils, vitamin E, and grapefruit seed extract are not preservatives. And if you’re using them as your only line of defence in a water-based product, that’s a compliance issue, not just a formulation preference.

Here’s why each one gets misunderstood:

🍯 Honey has some antimicrobial activity, but it’s not broad-spectrum and it’s not reliable at the low percentages most formulas use it at.

🌿 Essential oils vary hugely batch to batch and species to species. They haven’t been challenge tested in your formula, so you have no proof they’re doing the job.

✨ Vitamin E is an antioxidant. It protects your oils from going rancid, it does nothing to stop microbial growth. Different job entirely.

🍊 Grapefruit seed extract has a reputation problem. Studies have repeatedly found “GSE” preservatives on the market actually contain synthetic preservatives like benzethonium chloride, which is the real reason they appear to work.

If your product contains water, it needs a proper, challenge tested preservative system. No exceptions, no natural workarounds.

Not to alarm you, but there are only 15 Fridays left until Christmas.

If you’re making candles, essential oil blends, wax melts, diffuser blends etc, you need a CLP label and the right supportingl documents before they can legally go out the door.

If you’re making cosmetics, that’s a CPSR and its own set of documents.

Neither of those happen overnight. The brands who’ll be ready for Christmas are the ones sorting this out now, not in November.
