As a New York-based company, we loved watching the city celebrate the Knicks championship.

It also sent us down a rabbit hole on a topic we think about a lot: the systems behind performance.

One of the most interesting examples came from 2017, when Nike’s NBA jerseys began tearing during games shortly after becoming the league’s official uniform provider. The company investigated the failures, strengthened seams, and updated construction processes based on what it learned from real-world use.

The deeper we looked, the more examples we found of invisible infrastructure: equipment managers, inventory systems, laundry operations, maintenance, repairs, replacements, and logistics.

The championship is the visible part.

The systems that keep players, products, and equipment game-ready usually aren’t.

It is time to pause and rethink the concept of “innovation” itself, as well as the people behind it. There is a new wave of entrepreneurs tackling some of the world’s toughest challenges. Nancy Rhodes is one of them:

She is a tech entrepreneur and circularity expert with two decades of experience across design, retail, and innovation. She spent her career building footwear for icons like Beyoncé and Kenneth Cole, selling products across premium and mass-market retailers including Nordstrom, Target, and Marshalls.

Today, she is building the infrastructure for ownership as the CEO of Alternew, a digital care and repair concierge embedded into the shopping experience that connects customers to care guidance and local service providers (think OpenTable meets AppleCare). Nancy holds a Master’s in Sustainability and has shared insights with Bloomberg, Vogue Business, and Sourcing Journal.

We spent the day with the fabulous Nancy Rhodes, founder of @alternew_official and friends from @rawmeatandrepairco and @customcolab at the SoHo innovation pop-up by @primark exploring circularity, repair, and the simple magic of giving our favorite pieces a second life. My vintage denim came along too—Levi’s from the 70s and 90s—because great jeans deserve a long, glorious life.

Such a fun energy around the whole experience. Good people, great conversation, and a reminder that repairing what we already own is quietly revolutionary. ♻️
