What if textile waste could become a valuable raw material rather than an environmental burden?   That was one of the compelling questions explored during the closing panel discussion at the @aatcc_ International Summit Tuesday in Wilmington, N.C.   Moderated by Scot Case of the National Retail Federation, the session, “Repair at Scale: Aligning Stakeholders Across the Textile Ecosystem,” brought together (women L-R) Beth Forsberg, chief sustainability officer at Goodwill; Rebecca Geppert, director of partnerships at Refiberd; and Nancy Rhodes, CEO of Alternew & The Ownership Intelligence Lab.   The discussion explored how collaboration, emerging technologies and better data can help the textile industry extend product life, recover valuable materials and create new business opportunities.   Forsberg shared some eye-opening numbers about Goodwill’s enormous potential in textile recovery. Nationally, Goodwill handles approximately 4.6 billion pounds of donated materials, and 82.6% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Goodwill store. She described how the organization is moving beyond its traditional collect, sell and salvage model to explore advanced sorting, repair, workforce development and textile-to-textile recycling.   Geppert highlighted Refiberd’s innovative technology, which combines hyperspectral imaging and artificial intelligence to identify fiber composition within 2% of actual composition. The company is working with Goodwill in Arizona to test how this technology can identify materials suitable for recycling and help create more valuable recovery streams.   Rhodes emphasized the importance of engaging consumers before garments enter the waste stream, using care guidance, tailoring, repair services and smarter warranty programs to extend product life and strengthen brand loyalty.   #AATCC #AATCCSummit #Circularity #TextileRecycling #Sustainability

It was an honour to welcome Ten Years Forward: Celebrating a Decade of Women in Sustainable Business at the SDG Media Zone during UNGA. For a decade, Women in Sustainable Business, led by Dana Davis, has brought together a community of women committed to advancing positive, lasting environmental and social change through their work. This anniversary was an opportunity to celebrate not only ten years of progress, but the relationships, ideas, collaborations, and collective impact that have grown from this community. On a personal level, the evening also felt like a reunion, bringing together so many women I have had the privilege of working alongside and friendships created over the past decade. It was special to reflect on how much has evolved, both individually and collectively, over those years. Congratulations to the Women in Sustainable Business community on ten years, and to the many women whose work has shaped its journey. Here is to the decade ahead!

"Greenstacking" is the positive, phrase Nancy of @alternew_official created to capture and define the gains in the textile re-use and repair industry. As CEO, her vision and execution stands out in the textile industry as fulfilling one of the textile industry's biggest gaps in both sustainability AND business - repair 🧵 How have you been greenstacking low waste efforts so far this season? #lowwaste #alternew #dccw #textilerepair #lowwastecollective

Nancy Rhodes understands something a lot of people talk about but very few actually practice: the give-and-get model only works when you genuinely show up for people. And she does. Every single time. What stood out to me most at this gathering wasn’t just the founders or the technology - it was the shared understanding that ideas alone are never enough. Whether it was Washed Dads, IAMBIC, or the resale and real-time visibility platforms in the room, every founder started with a real problem worth solving. But the conversation kept coming back to the same thing: infrastructure. How do you move from insight to execution? How do you build something that actually scales - a business, a team, or a community? That’s the work I focus on every day through The Fashion Tech Exec. The founders who move fastest usually aren’t the ones with the best ideas. They’re the ones who respect the architecture required to execute them. And honestly, the same applies to community-building. Retail Women in Tech wasn’t built overnight. It was built through consistency, rigor, trust, and showing up long before there was proof it would work. All boats rise. 🙏
