November 1985 - Mommy walks out for the final time from abuse, and for reasons unfathomable, decides to take me with her. To Manila, where her friends shelter us, a different house every few weeks. I’d often wondered if we ever got to the brink of hunger or having to sleep on the banqueta. But all my four-year old mind knew: I was with her every single day, and that encompassed my entire happiness. Some months after, I’d be separated from her, and a few years more before we’d be reunited.

January 2024 - sitting outside the castle of the Japanese city I had come to call my own. We are both draped in mink. I’m taller, in many ways different from the tiny boy who held her hand tightly, trudging through the big metropolis. Her hair is all grey, a little stooped. We sit on my favourite bench, chatting into the late afternoon sky.

Taking the shot is one of my sisters, she with her more than unjust share of abuse, fear, loneliness, abandonment, and loss. Now she’s lady of a fantastic house in Abu Dhabi, and we talk of bags and fashion where some people discuss grocery lists.

It was the first Mercari purchase influenced by our eldest sister. “It’s your dream, what is the question?”

Ate was right - Miyake san is a Hiroshima native, lived through the atomic bombing; for close to two decades I was active as a fashion assistant; and yellow is Mommy’s favourite colour.

Flexing because very, very happy.

Yesterday, Malacañang Palace through Proclamation No. 1414 conferred on our composition professor Maestro Alfredo Buenaventura the title of National Artist for Music.

He was Letrán ‘47, half a century ahead of me in the class of ‘97. He recognised an uncle of ours who played basketball in the same ancient colegio, and was from a milieu where he could ask a classmate with glossy dark brown skin, “Ikaw ba’y taga-Cainta?”, in full Bulaqueño accent.

Whilst doing research in the Arzobispado archives, I came across his audition card for the Colegio de Tiples of the Cathedral. It was marked “sobresaliente”. He will end up with the Tiples de Sto. Domingo. You can understand why I worshipped him.
