When Paolo and I started going out, one of the first things I asked him was this: “Are you comfortable being around gays? Do you have any issues?”

In getting to know someone, it’s not what most people usually ask on a first date. But for me, it was unthinkable to be with someone who could not respect all genders. I was immersed early in the fashion industry and had built so many meaningful relationships throughout the years—with the designers, editors, directors, hair and makeup artists, stylists, production assistants, and my co-models. Everyone was like family to me and it was important that the person I was dating respected this family, too. Otherwise, it was a no-brainer for me to walk away.

“I have no issues at all,” he answered. “Growing up, my parents raised us not to be racist and not be sexist—to respect all people.”

And it was never lip service. Throughout the entire time we were dating and until today as a married couple, there was never a moment he disrespected any other gender nor felt superior as a male over others. He would be the first to get upset when he sees unfair treatment, even to household helpers or the basketball utility staff. There was even one time we were on vacation and we heard a girl screaming and wailing at the nearby cottage. He immediately ran closer and shouted to the guy to stop it. He was told off by the guy and even threatened Paolo. We had to back off in case he was armed and had to call security to check on it.

Just remembered all these about him because we recently experienced someone telling our daughters that gay is a bad word and it really got us upset. We immediately sat down the girls of course, but more on this next time. @paolotrillo has really been my best partner in gender-neutral parenting and raising empowered daughters.
