POSTS STORIES REELS

Marissa and I had been talking for weeks before this day…calls, emails, messages. Her planning the proposal, me suggesting spots, helping shape the details, listening.

So when the moment finally came, we weren’t strangers. And you can feel that in the photos.

There’s something I always tell my couples before a proposal session… talk the whole time. Don’t pose. Don’t force a smile. I ask them questions, about their story, how they met, what they’re excited about, and the moment they’re in the flow of a conversation, they almost forget the camera is there.

With them, it happened naturally from the very first minute.

If you’re planning a proposal or couples session in Antigua, Guatemala, send me an email at hello@dialvarado.com.

♡♡♡

Bárbara & Jorge. It’s not the first time I’ve photographed them, but some sessions feel different from the very beginning, and this was one of them… now they’re three!

Jorge read a story to the bump. Slowly, in a low voice. Then they had coffee in the kitchen and talked about small things, the kind that don’t matter and yet are everything.

Fátima hasn’t arrived yet. But they already love her like she’s always been there. by @alvaradodii

Valeria & Abel — Chapultepec, CDMX.

From capturing their moments in Guatemala to following them through one of my favorite cities. That’s the kind of work that doesn’t feel like work at all.

We thought the jacarandas would be fuller. They weren’t. But that morning was still exactly what it needed to be.

There’s no forcing anything with these two. We just walk, talk, and the moments find us. Their chemistry does all the work. I just follow.

A heron showed up too. Unbothered by all of us.

I love that photography takes me to places like this. Different cities, different light, different backdrops, but always the same purpose… to document love. 🤍

If you’re planning a trip and want someone to document it with you, send me an email at hello@dialvarado.com.

In April I was in Mexico City documenting a trip for one of my couples, we had already shot their engagement in Guatemala, and they wanted me with them again for this one.

One of the spots we visited was El Nido de Quetzalcóatl. Lalo, the park’s guide, took us through every corner, the mosaic walls, the silver sculpture in the grass, the spiral greenhouse glowing from inside. He was so patient with us. He knew we weren’t just visiting.

What I didn’t know until we were there… the serpent shape wasn’t planned. The architects noticed it from above during construction and leaned into it, even used the only cave left on the site to form the head. The colors come from the quetzal bird. And the cañadas and forest create their own microclimate, you can’t hear the city at all.

97% of the original green areas were preserved. Ten homes built into the earth, each one curving like a living thing.

Oh, and the park has been under construction since around 2008. Still going.

Honestly one of my favorite days from this year! by @alvaradodii

K&J

No guests. No announcement. Just them, the volcanoes, and the lake holding their secret.

Tonight the family celebrates. But the vows were already spoken.

Congratulations, you two. 🤍

Every piece in its place.

And then, the one that changes the game forever.

After the proposal at Santa Clara Ruins, I told them I had a surprise waiting.

We stepped outside, and there they were, a mariachi, strings already warm, ready to turn a quiet street into a stage.

They knew three songs by heart. When she asked for a fourth, one they’d never played, they didn’t stop, they just made it theirs, making up the lyrics as they went. The wrong words turned out to be the right ones. Carlos & Alondra couldn’t stop laughing.

They told me they’ll remember that moment forever.

They’re Mexican, so I knew exactly what their story needed, not just a photograph, but a song underneath it.

When you hire me as your photographer in Antigua Guatemala, this is what proposal photography looks like, done with the whole heart. Not just photos. A feeling you carry forever. 🎺🖤 by @alvaradodii

Most couples show up a little nervous. Not awkward exactly, just unsure of where to put their hands, where to look, what to do with themselves in front of a camera.

Y & R were no different. But what I noticed almost immediately was the way they laughed with each other, the inside jokes, the little teasing, the ease they had together. I didn’t have to create that. I just had to follow it.

That’s always how it goes. The best moments aren’t posed. They happen in between.

Beautiful photos are always a 50/50. I’ll guide you through every location, every movement, every moment. But it’s your connection that brings everything to life.

If you’ve been thinking about a session at Lake Atitlán, this is your sign. by @alvaradodii

Some gestures happen before words do.

A hand reaching for another.
Fingers intertwining without thinking.
The way someone holds the person they love, almost as if that place had always belonged to them.

After photographing so many proposals and love stories, I’ve learned to look there too… in the small things, in what happens without direction or intention, in the moments that aren’t meant to be seen.

Hands have a language of their own.
They say what the mouth sometimes doesn’t know how to say.

They hold tenderness, desire, trust, that sense of calm that comes simply from being close to the person you love.

Sometimes I ask couples not to hold hands. Not because I want them apart, but because I want to see what their hands do when no one tells them where to go.

And almost every time, the same thing happens… they find each other anyway.

Maybe because love has a memory of its own.
Because some bodies have already learned the way back to each other.

And then there is the ring.

Before a proposal, it may be just a piece of jewelry, a promise kept quietly in secret. But afterward, when it rests on the finger of the person who has just said yes, it carries a different weight.

It is no longer just a ring.

It is a promise made visible.
A quiet yes, still warm against the skin.
A small circle holding the beginning of a life they have chosen together.

Can’t believe their baby arrives this month!!

Looking back at this session, every spot after the first one was even better. There’s something about Lake Atitlán, the way the volcanoes hold everything in silence while life keeps moving in the foreground.

I truly enjoy capturing love in all its forms. 💕📷 by @alvaradodii

Selene and Michelle reached out because they wanted photos during their trip through Antigua. We talked over a video call, they shared a bit of their story, what they envisioned for these photos. The next day, a message outside the group chat — Michelle writing to me privately:

“Sending you a separate message… I did want to share some very exciting news and let you know that I will be proposing to Selene on this trip and was hoping to incorporate that in the photoshoot. I was thinking maybe we can capture the surprise during the last shots? Please let me know your thoughts.”

I said yes right away — happy, a little nervous, already feeling part of something big. We coordinated everything on a quick call, and from that moment on I carried the secret like it was my own.

On the day of the shoot, after walking through the streets of Antigua, we headed toward the ruins, and hit our first obstacle: nobody had cash for the entrance fee (not Michelle, not me, as usual). Luckily I have friends who lend me cash without asking too many questions. The plan: tell Selene I needed to “use the bathroom” at a nearby café, when really I was going to pick up the borrowed money. Selene thought it was the strangest thing in the world and honestly, fair enough.

Back at the ruins, everything went back to normal. We started shooting, the light was perfect, and then, the moment. Selene couldn’t believe it. Her reaction was so genuine, so real, that no direction was needed at all. Mission accomplished!!!!

“Diana’s energy and professionalism made us feel so comfortable in front of the camera… she went above and beyond to make our special moment absolutely magical.” — Selene & Michelle

Thank you for trusting me with this secret, for the shared nerves, and for letting me be part of a day you’ll remember for the rest of your lives. 🫶🏾💍✨

Some places feel written before they’re lived. The lake was waiting like that — still, almost holding its breath, the volcano a silent witness. He knelt without announcing it, a boat passing in the background, entirely unaware that something was being born.

Some couples learn to love each other across distance, holding onto what matters even when the map keeps them apart. And when they finally meet again, that time apart becomes the way they look at each other, as if every second together carried twice the weight. That’s what you feel here: two people who don’t need to rehearse closeness, because they already built it, miles ago.

Documenting this isn’t just photographing a ring, it’s photographing the exact moment a story decides to keep being told, together.
