William has found his Kate.
Let it be known.

If you’re not a local, William is the resident mute swan who appeared in our neighborhood two years ago and made himself at home. What started as novelty turned into concern—a swan without a mate makes you wonder.

As of this weekend, there’s a trumpeter swan in tow. North America’s largest native waterfowl. Enormous. Inseparable. Unbothered.

The neighborhood that once banded behind William now celebrates the pair.

Also a #lifer for me, so William’s out here delivering for everyone. 🦢🦢

Like many migratory birds, American Black Ducks possess the remarkable ability to orient themselves using celestial objects like the moon and stars. They are known to frequently travel at night, reducing exposure to predators and taking advantage of calmer air conditions.

Scientists have discovered they have specialized cells in their eyes that can detect the Earth's magnetic field—which they use in conjunction with celestial navigation—something that helps them navigate during cloudy nights.

While I was ecstatic to click this beauty against the #moon like this, we're witnessing more than just a beautiful coincidence—we're seeing an ancient behavior that has evolved over thousands of years. by @alwaysbebirdin

Tracking an urban apex predator through the changing evening light.

There is a distinct rhythm to watching wildlife adapt to the concrete landscape. From securing dinner in the fading afternoon glare to settling into a twilight silhouette as dusk took over, we both enjoyed a lovely evening together.

Humpback whales, an hour's boat ride from NYC? I just had to go.

The sky went from cloudy to ideal as we headed out into open water. Once we got there, the captain kept swinging the boat around, guessing where they'd surface next, and luck kept putting me in the right spot.

I've spent countless hours tracking birds through a viewfinder, but the first time this one rose against the skyline, I forgot about my settings and just watched. The whole deck went ooh, then aah, every single time.

For once, Manhattan wasn't the biggest thing in the picture, but I'm stoked that I got it in-frame.

All the best seats were gone by 9am

Turns out the crowding is why harbor seals off the coast of Maine can sleep at all. Seals in a group spend less time watching for predators than seals on their own, so a packed rock is the only place it's safe to stop paying attention. Well, until the boats arrive.

Schoodic Peninsula. An hour past the Acadia crowds. I was driving the loop when I spotted him — just sitting on his rock, deciding what sort of fish he wanted.

I stopped the car.
He slowly turned to lock eyes and went back to his thoughts—just what it looks like when something has no natural predators and knows it.

Then he took off. With all 7 feet of wingspan at eye level.

He circled once. Settled on the mossy rocks by the water like he'd been planning the whole performance.

I don't think he was performing.
I think we understood each other.

Seeing an Atlantic Puffin go 0–55 mph in 4 seconds will do that!
Like I mentioned in my recent carousel, these "airborne grapefruits" have to crank out up to 400 wingbeats a minute just to break the water's surface tension.
This frantic water-sprint is the only way they make it happen, and catching it on camera is pure adrenaline.
