If you appreciate a good heart tug, you should read this. This is a Swedish novel that was inspired by the notes the author’s grandfather’s care team left her family near the end of his life.

Bo lives a quiet existence with daily visits from fragmented memories and a caregiver. Bo becomes depressed when there is threat of losing his beloved dog Sixten. The stir of emotions and circumstances cause Bo to reflect on his life and relationships.

I was moved by Bo’s contemplation of his difficult relationship with his father and how it impacted the way he fathers his own son. I could feel Bo’s angst and conflicting emotions when his son visits and has to parent him. When Bo thinks about his wife he talks directly to the reader as if we are her ❤️ I liked the relationships and inner thoughts Bo had with the caregivers, the small interactions that mean so much as he is aware he has very little control of his life anymore. by @alwaysreadingmore

If you were a fan of Theo of Golden you’ll enjoy this story. The Correspondent is a look into Sybil’s life through the letters she writes and receives. Her story is one of grief and keeping hope that no matter how hard things get, it’ll end up alright. I especially loved how Sybil was a book lover herself and wrote letters to authors expressing her feelings and thoughts of their books, and they often wrote her back - I’m inspired to write my favorite author @barbara.kingsolver a letter! Sybil and her best friend ended their letters asking each other what they were currently reading ❤️ I got a few book recommendations from Sybil’s letters. I’ll be reading Lonesome Dove soon! by @alwaysreadingmore

New to me books I got in Staunton, Va ✨ I’m excited I found a signed copy of @sadeqasays newest book! She is a local author who writes about Virginia history. I looove Yellow Wife and House of Eve and always recommend them to fellow historical fiction lovers! I’m regretting not buying the signed copy of The Martian.

I put off reading this book thinking I wouldn’t like the time travel aspect, but I quickly realized this is one of those books that found me at the right time. The Midnight Library is a place after life but before death where one can revisit moments in their life they regret and see how different choices would impact their future. Nora is depressed and suicidal and full of regrets about how she lived her life. So when she gets to the Midnight Library she needs the help of her middle school librarian to guide her through the process of working through her regret and keeping hope alive.

Haig writes about hard emotions so eloquently. He understands depression and is able to describe it without being ingenuine or cheesy. I was moved by Nora’s growth and how much she softened, you can’t help but have love and compassion for her character. I found myself cheering her on when I knew she was making good choices that were hard - this helped me make a few discoveries about myself. As Nora became stronger, she was able to see the people around her more which brought light into her life. This book made me think about who my helper at the Midnight Library would be and I know it would be my high school art teacher. Don’t put off reading this book, it will probably heal something in you and the ending will uplift you! by @alwaysreadingmore

Bill lives a humble life in Ireland with his wife and 5 daughters. While doing a delivery to a convent he discovers something that he can’t ignore. As the reader you wrestle with Bill on what is the right thing to do… for those being abused, for his family, and for his own livelihood and reputation in the town. I love books like this that make you think deeply and contemplate how you would handle the situation. I like that Bill is heroic through compassion because of the kindness he was given growing up. Claire Keegan does a beautiful job of showing and not out right telling in this short but powerful book.

If you’ve read this let me know how you interpreted the ending. Do you think Bill did the right thing? I think there will be strife and hardship ahead for Bill - from his own family and his community, but he did his best with what he had. by @alwaysreadingmore

“Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it.”
.
This book is tragically wonderful and packed with emotional, deep quotes. Part 2 from the creature’s perspective was more interesting and moving to me because of his childlike innocence and kindness.

There is so much to take from this book – it gives a sense of unease and highlights the human desire for freedom and to be known. Victor and his creation have deep longing for real love and life and they ponder it individually at length. The real monster of the novel is Victor because of his abandonment and rejection of his own creation based upon his physicality. The creature is a monster externally, but Victor is a monster internally. Mary Shelley’s writing is incredible because despite Victor’s treatment of the creature, I still have compassion and can see him for the tragic man he is because we get the background of his personal journey and his manic need for creation. Similarly, Shelley creates the same compassion for the creature during his cruel and violent acts. I could discuss this book endlessly, I loved it so much.

I don’t often reread books, but this is one that I would and I know it will still move me. Frankenstein is now a part of the special spot on my bookshelf for my favorite novels. It has piqued my interest in gothic literature and made me appreciate Guillermo del Toro’s adaptations for the film. I must read Dracula now! by @alwaysreadingmore

I love seeing everyone’s Goodreads wrap ups! 👏🏼 My 2026 reading goal is to prioritize the books on my shelf and use my local library more. Not buying books is difficult when one of my favorite things to do is browse any bookstore at my leisure. Let me know your favorite book this year! by @alwaysreadingmore
