The Brightin Star 35mm f1.4 surprised me in several ways, particularly with its optical improvements. While it is far from being a flawless lens, I genuinely did not expect such decent and usable image quality at f1.4 from a manual lens in this category.

This lens is ideal for photographers who do not mind spending a little extra for a newer manual lens design with improved optical quality and good handling.

It is also a surprisingly good option for photographers who are just starting to experiment with manual lenses. Thanks to its versatile focal length, it works well across multiple genres, including street photography, documentary, and journalism, portraits, and travel photography.

Brightin Star really knows how to make an attractive lens.

This Brighin Star 35mm f1.4 carries a completely different visual identity compared to some of their other manual lenses, such as the Brightin Star 35mm f0.95. It feels like the company is trying to create a more distinctive design language for this series, and honestly, I like it a lot.

At first glance, the lens blends retro charm with modern styling surprisingly well. It has that classic rangefinder-inspired aesthetic while still looking contemporary. It is one of those lenses that simply looks good mounted on any Fujifilm camera.

Overall, the Freewell square lens hood is a great aesthetic and functional upgrade for the XF23mm f2.8. It enhances the visual appeal of the lens while also providing the flexibility of quick magnetic filters to elevate your shooting experience.

I am glad to see Freewell stepping in with thoughtful accessories like this. It’s a small addition, but one that genuinely enriches the experience of shooting with this compact pancake lens.

The team at Freewell seems to understand Fujifilm photographers quite well. If there’s one thing many of us want for our beloved pancake lenses, it’s a beautiful square lens hood, something that complements the minimalist aesthetic of the lens while adding functionality. And that’s exactly what they delivered.

Not only did they design a square hood for the XF23mm f2.8, but they also sweetened the deal by including three magnetic filters as part of the package.

The kit includes three filters:

Shooting at f5.6 does present challenges in low-light situations. But given its tiny footprint, solid metal build, and attractive retro design, I can easily see myself packing this lens for travel. It barely takes up space and adds almost no weight to the camera bag.

There is room for improvement, particularly in corner sharpness and perhaps a slightly brighter aperture, but if Brightin Star can maintain this compact size while refining optical performance, they might have something truly special on their hands.

Is it truly a “pro” lens?

From an image quality standpoint, I don’t think it fully earns that badge. However, in terms of handling, design, and build quality, it certainly feels premium.

At first glance, the Brightin Star 10mm f5.6 immediately stands out with its retro-inspired design. It’s compact and weighs just 100 grams. The vintage vibe comes through in several thoughtful details.

There is a dual silver metallic built-in lens hood that gives it character. The top plate features a small window to display the focusing scale, adding both function and charm. One of my favorite features is the focus lever, which makes manual focusing quicker and more intuitive. The aperture ring has a gentle, satisfying click, and it is something manual lens photographers will appreciate. Even the lens cap is metal-built.

If you already own the Viltrox 27mm f1.2 Pro and 75mm f1.2 Pro, this lens completes the f1.2 Pro “trinity,” making your lineup feel wonderfully cohesive.

Viltrox has consistently impressed with its Pro series, excellent image quality, reasonable pricing, in exchange for slightly larger size and heavier builds. The 56mm f1.2 Pro follows that philosophy closely.

Like its 27mm and 75mm siblings, the Viltrox 56mm f1.2 Pro carries a consistent design language. The all-metal lens barrel immediately feels premium, like you’re holding something worth every dollar spent.

As expected from a “Pro” lens, the Viltrox 56mm f/1.2 does not disappoint. It’s already sharp at wide open, with pleasing contrast and well-controlled chromatic aberration, even to my imperfect eyes. Vignetting is present but mild and easily corrected or avoided by stopping down or process in post.

At a 13.5mm full-frame equivalent, the 9mm f2.8 Air may be niche to some but with its solid autofocus, good optical performance, and very reasonable pricing, it’s a fantastic ultrawide option to keep in your collection. You never know when you’ll need it, and at this price, it’s an easy lens to justify.

Wide open at f2.8, image quality of this Viltrox 9mm f2.8 is impressive for such an ultrawide lens. Distortion is well-controlled, it is barely noticable with my not-so-perfect eyes. Sharpness is good, with pleasing contrast and almost no chromatic aberration. Some vignetting is visible at f2.8, but honestly, that’s quite normal for a 9mm lens and not something that detracts from real-world use.
