At least I still have my soul.
.
This journey has been nothing close to what I imagined. When I was diagnosed, I knew I wanted to capture this chapter in a way that felt true to me — raw, peaceful, and honest. While this is never something anyone wants to experience, I’m grateful to still be here to tell the story. To advocate for self-awareness, early detection, and strength in the face of the unimaginable.

Breast cancer at 19 was never supposed to be part of my story, yet somehow it became one of the chapters that shaped me most.

For this creative project centered around awareness and body positivity, the tape symbolizes binding the wounds — both physical and emotional. The flowers represent regrowth, healing, and becoming again after feeling broken. The emotions are real and unfiltered. No makeup. No hiding. Just authentic, pure beauty in its most vulnerable form.

“I do not and will not fear tomorrow, because I feel as though today has been enough.”

On April 26th my life was forever changed. I was hit head on by a drunk driver. I very briefly remember the accident. I remember waking up to people taking my vitals and asking me questions like my name and etc. I remember them cutting off the top of my car and my drivers side door just to get me out. I was then flown to the hospital. From there I was in and out of consciousness. I had emergency surgery on my leg. I had two fractures in my femur and tendons were messed up in my knee. Along with several cracked ribs. I was in the ICU for 2 days. I then had surgery on my pelvis, where I had 3 fractures.I spent 10 days at the hospital and then I was transferred to rehab. This will be a long journey.

October has always meant so much to me.

Long before I ever heard the words “you have cancer,” October was personal because of my family history. Both my mom and my grandma have been affected by breast cancer, so Breast Cancer Awareness Month was never just something I saw on social media or in stores. It was something that touched my own family.

Then, at 18 years old, it became my story too.

In January, I found a lump, and I was eventually diagnosed with Stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma, HER2-positive breast cancer. At an age when I thought I was just beginning to figure out who I was, I was suddenly learning about chemotherapy, surgeries, reconstruction, and treatments that I never imagined would be part of my life.

Now, October carries an entirely different weight.

I’ve made it through chemotherapy, undergone surgery and reconstruction, and I’m continuing my HER2-targeted treatments. I’m still healing, still adjusting, and still learning what life looks like after everything I’ve been through.

As a photographer, I spend so much of my life capturing people, their stories, their families, and the moments they never want to forget. Going through cancer has made me realize even more just how incredibly precious those moments are.

So this month, I’m not just sharing a pink ribbon. I’m sharing a piece of my story.

For my mom.
For my grandma.
For everyone who has fought, is fighting, or has been affected by breast cancer.
And for the 18-year-old version of me who never imagined October would one day feel this personal.

October will always mean more to me than awareness. It represents family, strength, survival, and a reminder to never take the little moments for granted.

With love,
Aly 🤍

The Death of My Tits.

Not exactly a title I ever imagined writing.

At 19 years old, I was diagnosed with Stage III HER2-positive breast cancer. One phone call changed everything. My life became filled with biopsies, ports, chemotherapy, scans, surgeries, and more appointments than I can count.

Today, I say goodbye to a part of my body that society often ties to femininity. But cancer doesn’t get to decide what makes me a woman.

This isn’t the end of my story—it’s the beginning of another chapter. One where survival is louder than fear, scars tell a story of strength, and healing becomes the goal.

To everyone who has stood beside me through this journey: thank you. Your love carried me when I couldn’t carry myself.

Here’s to living. Here’s to healing. Here’s to choosing life.
