One year later.

Hurricane Helene marked a line in our lives—there is a clear before and after.

A year later, Swannanoa is still missing so much: no park or playground at Owen Park, no grocery store, no post office, no hardware store. Our property is still in transition. We let go of the dream of a bridge, but thanks to the generosity of our neighbors, we now have a road—one that will soon be more permanent.

The storm lingers in quieter ways, too. Aelish still needs her room lit up at night, a reminder of the night everything went dark. “Mama do you remember that big storm?”
I’ve felt panic rise when the lights flicker, realizing I’m still carrying pieces of that fear.

And yet—through it all—our family is stronger than ever. I’m deeply grateful for Ryan, Aelish, and Maeve, for our friends, and for the community that has carried us through this wild, exhausting, and humbling year. taken in Swannanoa, North Carolina by @alyokeefe

We are safe! We managed to hike up and over the mountain on the backside of our land to evacuate. We were then rescued by Ansley and Asra. We are so grateful for our family and friends. One post can’t be long enough to thank all the people who have helped us the last few days. Scott drove us neccessities from Charlotte, Dan and Molly got us car seats and Dan even ventured to our land, Marissa got us a car so we could make it down here to Atlanta. Lauren has taken in our family. So many people have donated to our go fund me page and we can’t thank you enough! There will be a very long rebuilding process from here but we are just trying to take it minute by minute.

1.Friday morning. That was not even a creek before but now is a raging river. That’s also the only way off the land.
2.Saturday morning. Reassessing the river and realizing we need to find a new way out. We still had not been able to contact people and had no idea what was happening in town.
3.Aelish giving her ideas on how to get out. Just put glue and leaves on the car and when it’s windy just fly over the river. Obviously.

11 years!! Happy 11th birthday to Pure Barre Asheville! This also means I have been teaching pure barre for 11 years today!! So many memories and amazing friendships. I couldn’t be more thankful for these years 🥰 taken in Asheville, North Carolina by @alyokeefe

One whole month of Maeve. Tiny nugget. My rainbow baby. Scorpio Queen. Thank you for completing our family! I realized during this pregnancy that you’d be a force. There was adversity, (single artery umbilical cord, growth restricted and down to the 3rd percentile, deteriorating placenta, low amniotic fluid, a tiny uterus, cord wrapped around your neck, breech position) but you surprised us and your doctors with your ability to thrive. Here’s how you got your name:

MAEVE: Irish name meaning “intoxicating” and “she who rules”; legend’s queen of the faeries who was known for her beauty and determination

KATHRYN: @kate.g.b111 Your amazing aunt. My sister. My best friend. The person I’ve tried to be more like my whole life. May you have her thirst for knowledge and adventurous spirit. So excited for you two to snuggle in a couple weeks!

MARGOT: Your Papa’s best friend and sister. We wish you could have met her. She was courageous, confident, witty and beautiful in every way. We can’t wait to tell you stories of our adventures with her. Happy to have her name and essence now officially part of our family, though, in reality, it has always been. by @alyokeefe
