Ten years ago today, my mom attempted to end her life. She survived for nearly a month, but part of me has been standing in that morning ever since.
For years, September 11th arrived carrying anger, guilt, unanswered questions and memories I wished I could bury. I replayed what I could have done differently. I wondered whether one phone call could have changed everything. I became a mother and couldn’t understand how she could leave her baby with this kind of pain.
But ten years of grief has taught me that love and hurt can exist in the same place. That someone can love you deeply and still be too sick to love you in the ways you need. That forgiveness doesn’t erase what happened, and honesty doesn’t mean there wasn’t love.
Susie Q was complicated. She was also squinty eyes, a huge smile, freckles, wrinkly hands and a mischievous grin. She was clumsy, wild, strong and completely over the top.
I spent a long time remembering only the horrible things because trauma has a way of making itself the loudest thing in the room. But I don’t want the way my mom died to remain louder than the way she lived.
I see her in myself now—in my face, my laugh, my body, my grit and probably a little of my crazy. I see her in the way I love my babies so fiercely. I have taken the beautiful things she gave me and the painful things she taught me, and I am using all of it to be the mother I once needed. I hope she can see that. I hope she knows that despite everything, she is still loved.
I wish I had called you that morning, Mama. I wish I could have told you that you were enough, that you were needed and that the darkness was lying to you. I wish you could see the life I’ve built and the babies who would have loved every loud, embarrassing, hilarious part of their Susie Q.
Ten years later, it is still heavy. I’ve just gotten stronger at carrying it.
Tell someone you love them today. Squeeze them a little tighter. Ask if they’re really okay, and stay long enough to hear the answer.
And if you are the one who needs to hear it: you are loved, you are needed, and you belong in this life. Please stay. Call or text 988. taken in Mother of Wild- Flower House & Event Co. by @alyssa.ait

Not sure about you, but I hate walking into a home with kids and seeing a picture perfect, spotless home. We try our best to make our kids apart of home, it won’t be this way forever so why not teach them how to be apart of it.

1. Building blocks, they won’t play with these forever but in the small years it’s something easy to pull out if you have unexpected guests or to take up a little time throughout the day.

2. Books + Disco Balls, duh. Books are a big one for us, we have them all throughout the house and nothing makes you happier than discovering balls

3. Our oldest is always coloring, we have ours out on the kitchen island for school mornings when she waits for breakfast

4. Displaying the art they worked so hard on. Again, this won’t be forever so let’s celebrate it!

5. Using your decor as their “top secret spots”
6. Cook with them! Teach them little things throughout the years that will make adult life so much easier for them. There are times when u have a bad tomato or something like that that I just give them do they can work on their knife skills
7. Placing their toys in fun containers or simply using them as decor, it’s the perfect season for it
8. Massive rolling laundry basket— it’s fun, it’s massive (careful it fills up quick) and helps teach them to tidy up their rooms/the house.
9. A cake stand— honestly, I think they will bring this up when they are all older. “Mom always had something yummy and fun in a cake stand” it just adds a little sparkle to our lives.
