These are some of my favorite images that I’ve taken of families over the years. What do all of these images have in common?

1 - They never could have happened from a “shot list” alone.
2 - In almost every situation the conditions were not what most would consider “ideal”. Wind, rain, gloomy skies, strongly opinionated children, toddlers fighting bedtime, tons of wild energy.

But they turned out this way not because there wasn’t direction involved (there absolutely was). But the moments themselves unfolded organically, honestly, sometimes unexpectedly.

And I think this is where so many photographers (and honestly, clients too) start to panic during a session.

When the kids aren’t “behaving.”
When the light changes.
When the “timeline/checklist” feels off.
When things don’t go according to the vision you had in your head.

It can start to feel like the session is being sabotaged.

But I promise you… it’s NOT.

So much of being a great photographer has very little to do with controlling every variable and everything to do with learning how to work with the cards you’re dealt.

To observe instead of force. To protect the experience over the performance (this is a huge one!!!). To stay present enough to notice the incredible moments already unfolding in front of you.

Because at the end of the day, families are not going to look back and care whether the session checked every Pinterest box or impressed other photographers. 👀

They are going to care about how these images made them feel.

They’re going to care that they can still remember the way their toddler fit in their arms. The way everyone laughed together.
The tenderness and connection.

I strive for the opposite of perfectly curated now.

I don’t want every session to look the same.
I don’t want families to feel like they’re stepping into a formula.

My goal is for every client to feel seen, loved, understood, and safe enough to simply be themselves.

Because those are the images that become irreplaceable. The ones filled with emotion that only they can fully understand. 🫶🏼

Performance culture isn’t about doing more.

It’s about building the capacity to show up when life applies pressure.

Working long hours.
Raising a family.
Making decisions that actually matter.

That’s performance.

And it doesn’t happen by accident—it’s built, intentionally.
