Ik ben Alyssa, fotografe uit Delft. Mijn werk beweegt zich tussen documentaire, portret en fine art.  
Een tijdlang stond mijn leven volledig in het teken van tennis. Presteren, winnen, doorgaan. Tot ik merkte dat ik iets anders nodig had. Ik kocht een camera, zonder precies te weten waarom. Pas later begreep ik dat ik zocht naar vertraging, naar voelen, naar iets om vast te leggen wat anders zomaar verdwijnt.

Wat ik vroeger in sport zocht, vind ik nu in het vastleggen van rauwe, onbevangen momenten. In een oogopslag, een landschap, een ontmoeting. Zoals die met Emma (89), die ik portretteerde en mij vertelde dat het geheim van een lang leven “liefde” is. Zulke momenten zijn waarom ik fotografeer.

A Vision in Motion is een visuele interviewreeks waarin toonaangevende beeldmakers hun visie, werkwijze en inspiratie delen. Iedere aflevering is een oprecht gesprek over ons prachtige vak, een kijkje in het hoofd én achter de camera van een Colorwood ambassadeur.

Als vaste fotograaf bij het ABN AMRO Open, de Libéma Open en Premier Padel Rotterdam weet Alyssa van Heyst als geen ander hoe je onder druk de juiste keuzes maakt in gear en workflow.

Maar naast de sportvelden speelt zich een heel ander verhaal af. Een project over Nederlands-Indië dat begon bij haar eigen oma en uitgroeide tot iets veel groters. Ze portretteert en interviewt mensen die hun verhaal willen delen, waaronder een man van 99 jaar oud die de aanval van de Japanners heeft overleefd. Alyssa registreert de verhalen die anders verloren zouden gaan.

Sony Kando 2026. From wildlife to portraits. The people of the Danubu Delta, Romania. 📸🇷🇴

During my first Sony Kando Trip in Romania, after two days of trying to photograph birds flying past at full speed, we travelled another two hours through the Danube Delta to Letea, a remote village in the northern part of the delta.

Here, we swapped wildlife for a photography challenge and I got the theme “portraits”. I don’t speak Romanian, so taking their portraits mostly came down to smiles and hand gestures.

Later that day, I decided to stay in Mila 23 instead of joining another wildlife trip. Together with @daydreamrfilms I walked through the village and photographed some of the locals. I’m very glad I did.

As much as I enjoyed trying something completely new with wildlife photography, photographing people still feels most natural to me.

First @sony.benelux Kando Trip. First time in Romania. And definitely my first time photographing wildlife📷🇷🇴

A few days ago, I was standing at Schiphol with around 30 photographers and filmmakers from the Benelux, having no idea where @sony.benelux was taking us. We only had a few clues: wildlife, somewhere at “the edge of Europe”, around 21 degrees and some specific clothing advice.

In the days before the trip I felt a bit like a kid going on school camp. At Schiphol we finally found out: we were going to Romania, with the Danube Delta as our final destination.

After our first day in Bucharest, we continued towards the delta. Five hours by bus and another two hours by boat later, we arrived in Mila 23, a small Lipovan village of around 400 people in the heart of the Danube Delta, only accessible by water.

The next morning, at 6, we got into small boats with our cameras while the delta woke up around us. It was peaceful, until a kingfisher flew past at full speed and suddenly everyone was trying to follow it with their cameras.

I thought padel was fast… 😅

Photographing wildlife for the first time really challenged me. Sometimes it was frustrating when I missed the shot, but that made it even better when I got it.

And maybe that was one of my favourite things about this trip: trying something completely different from what I normally photograph.

There’s still a lot more from these four days that I want to share, but I’ll start with the wildlife. 🦅

More than just the photographs📷🇷🇴

One of my favourite parts of my first Sony Kando Trip was sharing the experience with around 30 photographers and filmmakers from the Benelux. Spending four days together, travelling through Romania and seeing how completely different image makers approach the same place was really inspiring.

From our first day in Bucharest to the long journey towards the Danube Delta, early mornings on the water and all the moments in between. And of course, lots of camera talk. 😅

Photography can be quite individual most of the time, so being surrounded by people who are just as obsessed with creating images as I am made this trip even more special.

I came home with a lot of photographs, new inspiration and some really good memories. And there wasn’t much time to slow down after getting back: this week I’m already back behind the camera at @premierpadelrotterdam @rotterdam.ahoy 🎾📷

Very grateful to have been part of Sony Kando Romania 2026. 🙏🏽

Still one more Kando post to come: the portraits I made of the locals in the villages of the Danube Delta.
