six years of my love and trust, thrown away

I’ve participated in NaNoWriMo since 2018. Every year since, I’ve looked forward to NaNoWriMo with a mix of excitement and nerves and exhilaration. I relied on NaNoWriMo to help me meet my writing goals, looked forward to late night (early morning 😅) sprints with friends and laughed at how skewed I knew my sleep schedule would get.

Despite all the hard work and exhaustion and stress, NaNo became like a holiday to me. November: the month of Thanksgiving and NaNoWriMo. I have a t-shirt for every year I participated. They are my trophies, my little collection I can look at and feel joy inside, because I *accomplished* something. I stretched myself, worked hard, and did something amazing—something I wasn’t sure I was capable of.

For six years, NaNoWriMo has been the joy of my November, a highlight of the year, the mountain I looked forward to climbing.

And they’ve shredded every ounce of love, trust, and dedication I had. I grieve for the program I trusted and took so much pride in. They’ve helped so many accomplish so much, and it hurts—it *hurts*—to see them take a stance that harms the writers they’ve spent so long inspiring.

I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the back by a friend. I feel like I’m watching my writing home burn.

Dear NaNo: please, PLEASE reconsider and clarify your stance on AI. This is a perilous time for all creatives—writers, artists, musicians, actors—and we need to stand as one, united against our common threat. AI is coming for all of us, but it’s not to late to fight back and make a difference.

It’s organizations like YOU who wield the most power. It’s people like YOU that industry professionals watch, gauge reactions, and make decisions around. YOU wield incredible power, but please, don’t swing your sword so wildly. You’re slicing the people you should serve and protect, and we’re bleeding—begging—you to reconsider.

In the end, you rely on writers. If you cut us off, you’re only driving the sword through yourself. by @ama.semper

This one was very fun to work on. These mini animations usually take me 2-3 days of on and off work, but I somehow managed to finish this one in a few hours—barely making it before ArtFight ended. 😅 Nothing beats that last-minute, deadline rush of adrenaline.

(I’m not the only one who does this, right? 😭 What’s y’alls’ wildest deadline story?)

artfight attack meme on @runningwindart ! 🫶💖

This was probably the most difficult animation I created for AF, but boy do I love how it turned out! I tried to make the butterfly’s flaps move in sync with the smile, and overall it worked. (I definitely could’ve done a better job animating the wings, though. XD) Still, I like how wholesome it turned out, and it was a great way to…flex my animation muscles? For lack of a better way to phrase it.

Only one more to post after this one! AF came and went way too quickly this year. 2024 has definitely been my favorite ArtFight so far, and hopefully I can do more animation attacks during it in the future.

“don’t roll your eyes at me” (artfight attack meme on @zoosea.art )

This didn’t come out quite as well as I hoped, but it was fun attempting to animate an eye roll. (Did anyone else use to think an eye roll was the eye moving in a full circle, rather than “looking up?” No? Just me? XD) Anyway, I tried to capture some “teen energy” in the expression, and even if it didn’t come out as well animated as I’d like, it was good practice. ☺️

dw it’s totally ketchup 🥰🥰⤵️

In my original story concept, this gal is a little more…✨ violent ✨ and the main trio raced to unravel the murd3r mystery and who did the deed. As I worked on the story more, that element became problematic plot and character wise, so I ended up cutting it. (God forbid a woman have hobbies 🙄💅 /j)

But don’t worry, she’s still plenty fiesty.

As I’m editing their book, there’s definitely more to rework, which is both exciting, daunting, and sometimes a bit sad. But I know it’s for the story’s good, so I’m excited to keep polishing it until it starts it shine. ☺️✨

I’m currently editing Birds of Prey, my wild west fantasy book with dinosaurs. If ya’ll like found family, “I’ll never love/trust again…oops” trope (platonically!), and buff, emotionally traumatized/slightly unhinged women who fight alongside & against dinosaurs—you’ll enjoy this book.

I have more art and animations on my page of them, and hopefully I’ll making more soon because at this point I kind of sleep eat breathe these guys. 🫡🦖

I’M NOT DEAD (and other life updates)

Hi guys! Surprise! I’m actually still alive! I know I keep falling off the face of the earth, so here’s more about how I’ve been slowly decomposing, some of my recent exciting accomplishments, and a little more about the art shared this post. (About both the first slide, and the other WIPs / some animations I have up my sleeve. Although actually, I have no sleeves. I live in tank tops. Yes, even when it snows.)

MY SLOW DECOMPOSITION:
Read the above knowing that I have a humorous tone, but laughter is my coping mechanism. Because while I joke about it, it’s actually been pretty hard. I’m not sure whether it was sparked by the stress of my dad’s cancer diagnosis, depression, or any number of undiagnosed conditions, but I’ve really been struggling with chronic fatigue. As in many—sometimes most—days I’ll be curled up on my floor, for hours at a time, just searching for the energy to move. It’s frustrating because I’m a very goal-driven person with high expectations for myself, and when I can’t meet them, when I fall behind, it’s hard not to feel like a failure. It also means the number of commissions I’ve been taking has drastically decreased, which is bad for my self esteem and wallet but good for my health and artistic inspiration. But wait…

I’VE ALSO ACCOMPLISHED SOME THINGS!
-first and most importantly…I finished writing Birds of Prey! 🎉🥳🎊 So my dinosaur wild west story is officially finished ahhhh!
-I’ve also started editing it eee! Editing feels like it takes more thought and energy than drafting, and it’s been going muuuuch slower than it should be. But I think that’s just the reality of my life with fatigue. 🤷
-I started an art business YouTube channel! I love art, business, and helping people, so I smushed them all together. My channel is @ ama.semper if you want to check it out. *winkwink*
