This year was a special year for the Animal Science Fall Gather during Ag Week. We celebrated Dr. John Matsushima’s outstanding career and service to the cattle feeding industry with the naming of the Dr. John K. Matsushima Livestock Research and Teaching Complex at @coloradostateuniversity’s Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center (ARDEC).

Thank you to all the students, alumni, faculty, staff, industry professionals, friends, and family who joined us for this special occasion 🧡

If you want to know who holds up the sky for Colorado State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, here they are.

Our five department heads—Patrick Doyle, J. Chris Pires, Francesca Peduto Hand, Noa Roman-Muniz, and Hayley Chouinard—lead with courage, wisdom, humor, generosity, and an extraordinary commitment to their people. They carry enormous responsibility, solve the problems no one else sees, and somehow keep moving their departments—and our entire college—forward.

I could not be more grateful for them. They are simply the best, and seeing them arm in arm on Ag Day captures exactly who they are: five remarkable leaders, standing together.

Thank you, Patrick, Chris, Francesca, Noa, Francesca, and Hayley. You truly do hold up the sky.

We don’t need an excuse to rep Aggie Orange—but #AgDay sure is a good one! 🧡🐏

This year marked our 45th Ag Day, one of our most memorable traditions celebrating our land-grant mission and agricultural roots. Special thanks to everyone who joined us at the @NutrienAgSolutions Ag Day BBQ. Each plate supports @CSUAgSci student scholarships, with nearly 400 Ag Day scholarships awarded since 2000. Go Aggies! Last weekend, @ColoradoStateUniversity turned Canvas Stadium into a rodeo arena for the inaugural Collegiate All-Star Rodeo as part of Bulls and Beats. Built in partnership with @PBR, this first-of-its-kind student-focused event kicked off PBR’s Team Series and brought together the Northern Colorado community and beyond across a phenomenal three days.

At first glance, Bulls and Beats may have looked like a celebration of Western heritage inside a modern football stadium. It was that. It was also a look at how we prepare the next generation for an economy in transition.

@CSUAgSci Dean Carolyn Lawrence-Dill and I reflected on what those students represent in a new op-ed for @FencePostNews — and why the future of work is taking shape in arenas like Canvas Stadium as much as it is in our classrooms and research labs.

Wheat is one of Colorado’s top agricultural commodities. Over the past two weeks, the Crops Testing Program hosted free, public field days at nine locations across eastern Colorado.

Held annually, these field days are open to everyone, from partners such as the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation and the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee to producers and seed company representatives.

These events provide an opportunity for researchers to share their work and demonstrate how they are helping ensure the safety, security, and long-term success of one of Colorado’s most important crops 🌾

Last week, I hosted the College of Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural Experiment Station Awards Ceremony – my first as Dean. We celebrated more than 40 remarkable individuals and teams whose work exemplifies excellence in the land-grant mission. And yet, one of the evening’s most powerful moments came from someone who wasn’t in the room.

Terry Engle, this year’s Lee Sommers Award recipient, wasn’t present to be honored for his career of exceptional scholarship, leadership, and service. Instead, Terry was out at ARDEC (our research farm), caring for baby calves during a freak May snowstorm.

What makes Terry truly extraordinary is more than his scholarship, mentorship of students, and global impact on livestock systems — it’s his unwavering commitment to showing up where he’s needed most. And on the very night we gathered to celebrate him, Terry was doing just that.

That’s servant leadership. That’s agriculture getting things done.

Thank you, Terry, for the example you set every day. by @amaizingag

Rams are in every corner of Colorado, returning home to strengthen the communities that raised them. That’s part of what makes Colorado State University the best land-grant university in the West.

Last week, our leadership team, alongside leadership from @CSUAgSci and @CSUExtension, headed to SE Colorado to hear their stories:

📍 21st Century Equipment
21st Century Equipment was built by the family of former Governor Roy Romer ‘50. We visited with Governor Romer and the team at the store, packing lunches for nearby farmers and sitting down with him to hear about his life.

📍 Seufer Farms
Dropped off lunch and learned about the deep roots the Seufer family has in the area.

📍 Stulp Farms
We shared lunch at Stulp family farm and heard how this farm has been passed down from Ram to Ram — Jensen Stulp and his late father, John, are both @CSUVetMedBioSci grads who’ve spent their lives caring for the land, the community and the animals.

📍 Lamar Community College
Spent time with President Rosana Reyes and her team to talk about transfer pathways, dual admission and how we keep opening doors for SE Colorado students.

📍 SE Area Commissioners
Met with local officials to hear what the region needs and where CSU can help.

📍 Hemphill Farms Visited with Ryan Hemphill ‘06 and his wife Teale on the Fort Lyon Canal, where they’re carrying forward the family operation. We also caught up with Jack Goble ‘05, general manager of the Lower Arkansas Valley Water Conservancy District, working to protect local water rights.

📍 Karney Land & Cattle
Joined Erin Karney-Spaur ‘12, ‘14 and the Karney family, who shared their ranching history and the open conversations of passing a ranch to the next generation.

📍 Arkansas Valley Research Center
Closed the trip at the oldest continuously running ag experiment station in Colorado, with a tour of the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab and a packed-room conversation with Lower Arkansas Valley commissioners, Otero College President Kim Zant and CSU staff on water, agriculture and rural resilience.

The biggest gratitude to everyone who hosted us — and to those who planned another wonderful trip to see our Rams.
