My dad immigrated from India to England to the US. Now I just got my UK visa 🇬🇧 Comment “SHOES” and I’ll send you the full story! I wrote a personal version on my new blog - lmk if you want to read it 🫶🏼

At my visa appointment, I looked around at the others also applying, wondering what it would feel like to be in their shoes. I think about my dad’s experience - traveling from India with my grandma on her own with three young kids in the 60s.

And still - even by choice - it’s stressful! Navigating a different language for a visa or a trip can be overwhelming. (Especially when you have a shoe crisis at your first ever visa appointment in madrid Spain circa 2017, but that’s for another time)

One of my husband Danny’s songs highlights this experience of a refugee, a glimpse into another persons life. That why I love Dannys song writing, he often gives voice to perspectives that aren’t normally heard. Some lyrics from his song, My Name is Samim,
“all I’ve done is on my clothes - torn up gloves, worn down soles…”

In Italian, you’d say: To put yourself in someone else’s shoes 🇮🇹 Mettersi nei panni degli altri Sound it out: MEHT-tehr-see neh-ee PAHN-nee deh-lyee AHL-tree

Think airport security. When else do you need “take off your shoes”? You don’t learn that phrase in your first grammar lesson - but you need it to get where you’re going.

This is why I care so much about teaching practical language. Not textbook stuff - just the exact words you need in those moments when you’re just trying to get through the day.
