There are certain days in your life that stay with you forever. The kids call them core memories.

One of mine is the day I became a mermaid. 🧜‍♀️

Yes, an actual mermaid. And strangely enough, it had very little to do with the tail.

It was a day during a season when I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing, who I was becoming, or if life was ever going to feel really good again.

And then I surprised myself.

New story in The Hive today. The day I became a mermaid — and the day I realized everything was going to be okay.

Making friends in midlife can be surprisingly hard.

When I moved from California to Texas, I barely knew anyone.

I met Mandy, started following her on Instagram and eventually thought, I think we could actually be friends.

So I took a chance and invited her and her husband over for dinner. I was pretty sure she might think I was a creeper. 😂

She said yes.

That one invitation turned into a great friendship, and eventually introduced me to other women who have become good friends too.

Mandy and I joke about it now, but we’ve realized there’s something to it:

You have to have the courage to make the invite.
And the courage to say yes.

And that’s part of why we’re doing You Can Sit With Us. On Wednesday, October 14 from 5:30–7:30 PM at House of Shan Cottage, Mandy and I are hosting a happy hour for women looking for more connection, conversation and friendship.

Maybe you’re new to Austin. Maybe your friendships have changed. Maybe you just want to meet some new women.

No registration. No RSVP. Just show up.
