Amani Sloley discovered his passion as a violist in his local high school program. Staying curious, he was inspired by his post-secondary professor spending nights uncovering contemporary scores that led to writing his own music performed by local artists.

After working under the guidance of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (TBSO) as Audience Service Coordinator, Sloley applied his experience to pursue his first sold-out concert, then landing his second at the Magus Theatre. He is now bringing his next experience to Brampton, Ontario.

🎯
How has music impacted or changed your life?
Sloley has built a strong community of friends who believe in each other’s vision.

💪
What challenges have you experienced
in the music industry?
With the music industry striving to become more inclusive, discrimination against colour and sexuality, including lack of diversity, is not often spoken about.

We want to inspire and take the lead in the right direction by making lessons and instruments more accessible and affordable to everyone.

✨
What continues to inspire you?
Solely, passion and experience in the industry started to open another door as an Art Administrator, leading with compassion and empathy.

💡
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Trust the process and the journey; it is okay to not know exactly where you fit in right away. Stay consistent and never give up. Remember, your self-worth is not tied to your performance.

Most importantly, discover who you are outside of your craft. Sloley enjoys baking, gardening and reading queer and black history literature.

2025

This year held some of my highest highs and lowest lows.

I finished my one-year position with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, which taught me alot about the arts industry and strengthened my goal to create my own inclusive space within the white, heteronormative field of classical music.

This year I launched and hosted the first Composers Canvas concert at Magnus Theatre with support from a CMC grant. Supporting and highlighting 12 Northwestern Ontario composers taught me how important it is to invest in and build from your own community.

I played a wide range of gigs around Thunder Bay, performed with the Thunder Bay Community Orchestra, subbed with the TBSO, had my debut orchestral work Skybound performed by the TBSO (still wild to me), premiered my mixed ensemble piece scatterings, spoke on CBC Radio to promote Composers Canvas, and was featured in the February issue of the Strad!!!

Leaving Thunder Bay meant saying goodbye to a place that shaped me for the past five years. I also left my teaching position at Coran’s Music Education, where I spent nearly three years as the strings teacher and loved every second of it

The lows: early in the year I was accepted into Goldsmiths University’s MA Creative Practice program in London, England, but due to alot of logistical reasons, I wasn’t able to go.

In July, I sat on my first Ontario Arts Council jury, learning more about the granting world. I also returned to The Cremona Academy & Festival, this time working on the admin team!! Definitely one of the highlights of the year, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones (and yes, losing my passport in Italy 🤧).

Now I’m back in Brampton, playing in the Rose Orchestra viola section, working more across the GTA, writing way too many grants, and reconnecting with old friends while building what comes next.

…and I’d do it all again taken in 2025 by @amanisloleymusic

VIOLAAAAA 🎻🌹

Haha, this was a fun concert with the Rose Orchestra, and I'm excited to start working as the viola mentor for the Rosebuds for the next few concerts. This concert was the first one my family could come and watch, and it definitely was great knowing they were in the audience ❤️ taken in The Rose Theater by @amanisloleymusic

Thank you, Thunder Bay!

A huge thank you to everyone who attended A Portrait of Northwestern Ontario, the very first Composers Canvas concert.

We’re so grateful to @magnustheatre for hosting us in such a beautiful venue, and to @cmcnational for backing this vision from the very beginning.

To our audience, thank you for attending, listening, and supporting contemporary sound art in Thunder Bay. With 85 people in attendance, this debut concert was a huge success and a sign that there’s a real hunger for new music in this community.

We’re also deeply thankful to the incredible musicians and composers who brought this program to life. This wouldn’t have been possible without their amazing pieces.

We’re just getting started!! taken in Magnus Theatre by @amanisloleymusic
