Among all the hustle and bustle of this unpalatably multicultural city, there is some beauty which transcends the violent unpleasantness of the political stress one experiences daily. The gorgeous decorative tiles placed on the pavement, here and there, an exotic blossom of the passiflora growing by the entrance door or reflection of the sun's light from the skyscrapers..
It's these details and moments which capture my attention.

The Mysterious Fayum Portraits, Faces from Ancient Egypt by Euphrosyne Doxiadis

" In a community as mixed as that of Greco-Roman Egypt there was a wide variety of religious beliefs, mythologies and practices. The mixture seemed to work perfectly well on the spot, but often surprised visitors from outside.

In the Egyptian cult of the dead the Fayum portraits were by definition objects of veneration since, as part of the mummies with which they were found, they were regarded as the immortal surrogate of the deceased. The dead men were identified with Osiris and therefore imbued with the god's divinity, and dead women with Isis and perhaps with the cow-goddess Hathor.

The naturalism that is the prime characteristic of the best Fayum works was directly inherited from. the famous 4th century Greek painter Apelles and his contemporaries

When the portraits were completed, not yet on the mummy, they were Greek works. By the time the Egyptian embalmers had decorated the body of the deceased with scenes in gold leaf, the inserted Greek portrait would initially have looked stylistically out of place;it would have to be related to the rest of the mummy by the application of the gold leaf additions directly onto it.

These two-dimensional additions stand out as quite foreign elements amidst the subtle, earthy tones of the painted portraits, with it's illusion of depth

The Fayum portraits are Greco-Egyptian artefacts of Roman Times. The people portrayed followed the ephemeral fashions in clothing and hairstyles of contemporary Rome but continued their own deeper traditions regardless of the nationality of their country's occupiers. "

This edition was first published in Egypt in 2000.

For me, these captivating portraits tell us such incredible stories, with the glinting light in their eyes and their golden decorations gleaming for eternity, their faces conveying so much characters that you could almost imagine their personalities. They narrate their lives, silently, by gazing back at us.

I wish I was able to show you the idea, the details, my thoughts, then the finished shawl and me wearing it, the beautiful, changing colours, all at once, but alas, I only have these photos as impressions of all of that.

It is a handwoven shawl inspired by the idea of the Tyrian purple, an ancient dye made of crushed murex snails, from the Phoenician city of Tyre, in ancient times.

I worked quite diligently on it, weaving it on a loom then doing the embroidery, and lastly creating these gorgeous fringes using various braiding and knotting techniques. The book was a gift from friend who found it in one the second hand book shops in Brussels. The book teaches various techniques for creating fringes & cords and it's quite useful. 🐚💜

What I have created is a handwoven, winter shawl inspired by the ancient dye used for the clothes of the Roman elite and ruling class. Known as Tyrian purple or porfira, it was a dye extracted from the murex snails and regulated by law due to the expensive production process. It was a dye made by the Phoenicians, succeded by the ancient Greeks and Romans.

The constant change of the yarn of different colours during weaving gave a kind of texture without a pattern which demonstrates the whole idea of this porfira, not being one particular colour but several shades simultaneously.

The finishing touch was embroidered stitches along the shawl in subdued gold evoking a toga like look. 🐚💜

You can enjoy these images demonstrating my inspiration and how I transferred it from the idea in my head, into paper to textile and something beautiful to wear, something with a story.

Sunset was so beautiful and mellow today, It called me out so I layed on the carpet of dried grass and fallen leaves, where my cats joined me. After a while I got up and got my spinning wheel out, all the baskets of wool, stools and everything else then I tuned in to some Ancient fm radio and had a wonderful time.

I had to assemble a little album which fuses crafts,
esoterica, some beautiful items and some cats, actually... all the essentials for a fairytale, because I do feel like Rumpelstiltskin.
