I wish I was able to show you the idea, the details, my thoughts, then the finished shawl and me wearing it, the beautiful, changing colours, all at once, but alas, I only have these photos as impressions of all of that.

It is a handwoven shawl inspired by the idea of the Tyrian purple, an ancient dye made of crushed murex snails, from the Phoenician city of Tyre, in ancient times.

I worked quite diligently on it, weaving it on a loom then doing the embroidery, and lastly creating these gorgeous fringes using various braiding and knotting techniques. The book was a gift from friend who found it in one the second hand book shops in Brussels. The book teaches various techniques for creating fringes & cords and it's quite useful. 🐚💜

What I have created is a handwoven, winter shawl inspired by the ancient dye used for the clothes of the Roman elite and ruling class. Known as Tyrian purple or porfira, it was a dye extracted from the murex snails and regulated by law due to the expensive production process. It was a dye made by the Phoenicians, succeded by the ancient Greeks and Romans.

The constant change of the yarn of different colours during weaving gave a kind of texture without a pattern which demonstrates the whole idea of this porfira, not being one particular colour but several shades simultaneously.

The finishing touch was embroidered stitches along the shawl in subdued gold evoking a toga like look. 🐚💜

You can enjoy these images demonstrating my inspiration and how I transferred it from the idea in my head, into paper to textile and something beautiful to wear, something with a story.

As the snow falls and covers the forested hills and mountains I feel safe and cozy in my house, by the fireplace. All around the world people decorate their homes, streets, stores with Christmas decorations, everything shinning and sparkling, crimson on green... so that's what I had in mind as I wove this piece.

It is a huge winter shawl which will give its wearer that perfect Hogwarts at Christmas vibe and more importantly you will be safe from the cold as you wrap yourself in it.

The shawl is 2. 83 m long, 61 cm wide and weighs
a kilogram.

Happy Holidays everyone! ❄️

This project was something I've been doing on and off for a long time and I've just now assembled all the photos which span almost a decade now, which literally blows my mind. It's a compilation of my travels, my passion for hand crafts as well as history (and capturing beautiful moments).

I guess I should start with the idea of sashiko, a Japanese technique of embroidery which is both decorative and also used for mending torn clothes. It's philosophy goes far deeper but to me, it's simplicity brings beauty and meditation in its repetitiveness. So... using this technique I've made lots of items, among which is this kimono like winter coat, which has an insane length of sashiko stitching!
Then a little hat which has a kind of patches of various textiles and you can see several photos of how I've created it.

Scattered among these creations are random photos from my journeys from Hong Kong, China and Belgium complimenting my creations with their colours. The one I'd highlight as the most captivating is the small entertainment park at the Hong Kong docks. It was the season the monsoon
back in 2019 and I've traversed the city with a, then, colleague from work. Soaking wet, we had explored that incredible city, a blend of jungle, futurism and buddhism.

Both the coat and a hat are available for purchase, if you are Interested. The coat is an L men's size.

Autumn has come once more. Nature has been painted masterfully in the most gorgeous colours. Every living thing has camouflaged itself to match it's surrounding. The trees and it's fallen leaves create something magical in human psyche... is it melancholy... or nostalgia or yearning for some elvish worlds... ? It certainly plucks those chords in me!

My atelier is as busy as ever with several ongoing projects! I turn back again at this incredible creation, Autumn leaves projects which yielded few items such as a hat, a huge shawl, a vest, few small pouches and few shamanic wall decor..

The weather is getting more cold and wet and you'll definitely need a shawl this season, so why not a statement shawl with a story? Check out my work and if you see something you like don't hesitate to send me a message 😊✨
