I had a dream in 2019 that my husband and I were driving on the highway and an enormous white orb like another planet in orbit rose up from the horizon. I asked him “do you see that?” and he said “no”. It grew larger and rose higher into the sky as we passed the last exit on the highway, and I asked him again “don’t you see that?” He said “no, I have no idea what you’re talking about. There was nowhere left to turn around so I asked him again “you’re telling me you don’t see that?”, but this time he said “oh yeah I see it now”. I said “we need to turn the car around”, and he said “we cant turn around now, we just passed the last exit”, but I could feel the heat from the engine and from the sun and from this thing in the sky and something just wasn’t right. I said “we have to turn around now” and I grabbed the wheel, but it was too late. When my hand touched the wheel time slowed until everything around us came to a stop except for the rising orb. No more wind, no more sound. Slowly and mechanically the thing dismantled itself, coming apart like a puzzle, and revealing a series of wheels within wheels spinning inside of itself. The wheels spun faster and faster until, as if blooming from the center of it, it burst into a great white nothingness.

I bathe where moonlit shadows cling,
howling long and low,
I drink of night from blackened spring,
And dream of dawn unknown

I hadn’t heard from my friend in a while. I couldn’t get her on the phone, she hadn’t been online. One Friday I woke to a figure in my doorway. It was dark so I couldn’t see her face, and she was trying to say something but it was too quiet to hear. I said “I can’t hear you, I can’t see you, come inside and turn on the light.” My husband woke me up. I have sleep paralysis, and I was a little worried that it was happening on this day, because he was leaving for Texas to drop off some of my paintings to a collector. I was afraid it would happen again when he wasn’t there to wake me up.
Two mornings later it happened again. I awoke to the same figure, but this time she was next to my bed. She was still trying to say something to me but I still couldn’t hear her. I said “ come closer, I can’t hear you, I can’t see you, turn on the light”. I woke myself up saying “you’re okay, you’re okay.”

I would later learn that my friend, on a Friday night, attempted to, but failed, to take her own life. Two days later she was in a medically induced coma.

I had visions that I was in a smoky bar approaching a jukebox to choose a song, but it was blocked by 3 women playing string games.

My friend was taken off of life support, and began breathing on her own. She survived. When she was rehabilitated enough to speak she called me. I was so happy and so relieved to hear from her, her voice on the phone was soft. She told me that when she was in the coma, she dreamed she came to my house looking for me but found my husband first, so she got in the truck with him and went to Texas, where she was supposed to meet her new husband. He dropped her off at a roadside bar. The bar was dark and smoky with the glow of a jukebox playing a song she couldn’t quite understand. Her new husband was a cowboy who drank and drank until she didn’t recognize him anymore and she was afraid. She recalled the smell of liquor. She wanted to leave but she couldn’t leave the bar, she was trapped and she just wanted to go home.

I’m glad she came home.
