Ep 5: The one where we all had a nervous breakdown

Y’all…. Spoiler alert if you didn’t watch @nextlevelcheffox in real time. IT WAS A DOOZIE!!!!

I have things that need to be said!

Was the burger @nyeshajoyce made THAT good? Yes it damn was and when my mind wanders- that’s the home it goes to 😂

Am I crying like a proud ass mama over @chefpyet performance? Yes I am.
Not only did she get immunity for our team but, as a friend I knew she was going through some incredibly difficult things that day personally. Unimaginable.
And she pulled it together like a true professional all while successfully achieving her dream of spotlighting indigenous cuisine. When people go around calling each other a QUEEN, this is what it should be for.

Did I forget a bun and make a hot mess of a juicy lucy? I did- but she had a good personality. We don’t always look good baby, but the inside counts!

Was this elimination one of the most stressful things that didn’t even involve me ever?
Yes.

These two individuals who were not on my team, are on my heart team. @chef_jonathanharrison is a talent, a gentleman, an amazing friend and incredible soul. You see me squeeze him like that because I was so proud to know him I could erupt.

and then there’s the other side of the coin. Saying goodbye to the effervescent @devonnieblack . what you don’t realize is that while we were filming these long rigorous and emotionally demanding episodes, this woman had a baby back in her room that she cared for when we were off of set. She puts her soul, her heart, and her culture and to every plate all while being quite possibly the best mother I’ve ever seen. An author, poet, and perfect skinned beauty.

Hopefully if you learned anything from last nights episode it’s that this show is not easy. Not for any skill level, and certainly not emotionally. Yes I literally stand watching the episodes like I didn’t live it because I’m still so stressed lol

And what? …and the Cornell 7 to do jail time.

I want the other boys in that group chat to ‘write essays’. I want administrators who failed women fired. I want to stop seeing women blame women and men defend “the boys.”
I want us to stop normalizing the numbers.

I want a crowded table. And I want to look around it at every teenage girl I love without wondering what happens when she leaves it for college, a party, a date, a dorm room, a life of her own where she should be SAFE. Not meat, like what’s on our damn table.

I want her biggest problems to be shitty roommates, hard classes, diet heartbreak and figuring out who she is.

Not whether she’ll be believed.
I want everyone added to this table to have human rage.
Because feminine rage has apparently never been enough.

We called it hysteria. Hormones. Emotional. Drama. The weaker sex. Politics?

Women have spent generations learning how to say please stop hurting us in a tone gentle enough that nobody accuses us of overreacting.
I’m done with gentle.

I want fathers angry. Brothers angry. Boyfriends angry. Coaches angry. Professors angry. Other men in the group chat angry.
Not because they have daughters.

Because women are fucking people.
Stop protecting “the boys.”
Protect the girls.

I believe women.
And I want the goddamn crowded table of people who do too.

This year has proven that happiness can be hard to come by sometimes.
Not because joy isn’t real, but because life can get loud, painful, complicated, heavy, and deeply human.

So lately I’ve been thinking less about how to find happiness, and more about how to chase it well.

I came across the Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest-running studies on human life and well-being. It began in 1938 and has followed people across decades, looking at what actually contributes to health, fulfillment, and happiness over time.

And the biggest takeaway was not “make more money,” “be more enviable,” or “look better.”

It was this: good relationships matter, a lot.

Connection. Community. Feeling loved. Having people to lean on. Investing in the people who matter to you. Building a life that feels meaningful, not just successful. Having real support for the good days AND the bad ones.

It doesn’t make hard seasons less hard.
But it does remind me that happiness may not always be something flashy or constant. Sometimes it looks more like being supported, being understood, laughing with your people, showing up for someone else, and letting them show up for you too.

So if happiness has felt elusive lately, and if you watch the news it probably does, maybe this is a good place to start.

A lot of things in Texas are illegal. Looking sunkissed with a UV-free tan is not one of them. 👮🏼‍♂️☀️😂 Thanks to some codes that I’m about to offer you, you don’t have to be criminally pale either.

Exhibits A through whatever slide I stopped counting: me, with a fresh spray tan going on trips, beach days, high school reunions you name it… With confidence.

4 women walk into a wig shop and it’s not even the beginning of a joke…

This whole ridiculous, colorful, wildly whimsical day was for @laurelbeyers , one of the quirkiest, funniest, most brilliant and completely unique women I’m lucky enough to call a true best friend.

There are people who make life more fascinating just by being in it, and she is absolutely one of mine.

Love you endlessly, you beautiful little weirdo.

Thank you for making it safe to dream.

For making it OK to be ourselves, however we did or did not want to be. To pursue what we wanted and succeed in whatever fashion suited us.

Thank you for showing generations of women that we could contain multitudes. That we could be feminine and formidable, silly and brilliant, glamorous and deeply serious, ambitious and kind. That being beautiful or bold or sexy or funny never had to mean a damn thing about our intelligence, our depth, or our worth.
Thank you for a thousand hilarious one-liners that made that lesson even easier to learn.

Thank you for the deeply insightful and beautiful things you said over the years that helped my heart soften toward things that otherwise might have hardened it.

Thank you for putting your money, time and enormous heart behind people who needed it. For books in the hands of children, help in the hands of people who had lost everything, and compassion extended without first asking whether someone believed, lived, loved or voted exactly as you did.
Thank you for showing us that you don’t always have to fight someone to make a difference. Sometimes you can just love people really, really well.

And thank you for never making yourself smaller to make other people more comfortable. You somehow became larger than life while making everyone else feel like there was room for them, too.

@dollyparton , the world was better with you in it…But gosh, do I hope you’re kickin back with my mama somewhere, laughing. She loved you, and she passed that right on to me.
