β€œIt is cheaper to eat the poor than to feed them.”
πŸ₯’πŸ«€πŸ½οΈπŸ₯©πŸ‘Ή
This was brilliant! So many things made me almost sick and grimace and chuckle and then stop reading in disgust. I have read some disturbing books, this is somehow worse and not that bad either, I can't explain. There are things that are horrifying but I know not everyone will feel the same way.
This is easily one of my new favourite books this year, actually, in my top books of all time.
It's a well known fact(hopefully) that I'm greedy for fictional Cannibalism, so even the tagline on the cover "not suitable for vegetarians" couldn't deter me to read this book. I wasn't really expecting to like this book, but in the end it crept up on me and hit me with one of the best and unexpected endings I could have gotten from a book.
At first I hated that the main character was a man (narrator is a woman so that definitely worked for me) but then I realised he's a perfect character for this kind of job, I would never be in his situation, and many women either, so I can definitely imagine this man ending up in this scene because of his greed and bad decisions. He infuriated me most of the time, there was one moment I felt bad for him but then he managed to do and say something to make me dislike him even more.
"Is he inadvertently killing a part of himself in that pan, too?"
As usual I have saved some strong quotes that made me stop and stare at the text because in the end this all was masterfully crafted story about humans always wanting more and never leaving innocent beings in peace, but instead cutting them in pieces to fill their black holes in their two stomachs(one is definitely situated instead where their hearts should be)
I read this as an ebook + an audiobook (perfect reading experience for me) and I need to have physical copy on my hungry shelf, hopefully I'll get it soon.
I will not be spoiling anything, I just want you to know that this book is definitely not suitable for vegetarians, even more for vegans, but surprisingly after I went vegan I've been craving more fictional Cannibalism and this definitely satiated my hunger and my neverending greed for deliciously cooked books.

"She filled her hours with activities, but none of them really amounted to anything. It was just a carousel of banality”
πŸͺπŸ«€πŸ“š
This book was definitely funny, sharp, dark and twisted, and unhinged, murderous and upsetting at times, with smart and deadly main character who definitely did kill her family and told us almost everything about it. I've seen so many negative reviews, but I did really enjoy reading and listening to it, narrator did well and I finished the book in one day. Didn't expect to like it this much and I think most negative reviews are too harsh, but we all have our preferences. The twist in the end definitely made me pause the audiobook and stare at the kindle app trying to connect the dots that we didn't really have before that.
This is not a spoiler since the title tells you she will be killing her family, but when she was with her vegan uncle I thought she would leave him alive because he wasn't like their other family members but she didn't and honestly, good for her. Still sad though. But also, understandable in a way. I would never kill anyone, not even my family members, but somehow dreaming about killing toxic father is therapeutic, and reading about him dying was also a bit soothing. I've had this on my shelf for several years and I'm glad I decided to randomly attack physical TBR (even though I read ebook and audiobook, my physical copy was still touched)
Featuring my creepy googly art, because I'm finally painting again and it was kinda fitting with pink and blood dripping. Hopefully I'll be reading and painting even more creepy stuff.

"Some books, a witchlight, a laptop, clothes. Have clothes ever killed someone?"
πŸͺ²πŸ’€πŸ‘»πŸ˜»πŸ”Ž
This book was so much fun! I've had it on the shelf for several years and wanted to read but the size was scaring me, it's not huge but anything over 300 pages just feels like big commitment, especially when it's part of a series. But it's queer and magical murder mystery, so how could I not read it! And the main character is shaped like me and shown on the cover too! Also the tagline "be gay, solve crime and take naps, that's basically a to-do list and I'm here for it! I loved almost everything in this story(Selene part broke my heart and I'm not forgiving them for this)
It's witty and witchy and there's a ghost with cat ears and friendship and snooping around and using spells for chronic illness and well lots of interesting things are happening and I can't highlight everything. As someone who grew up loving Sherlock Holmes and wanting it to be magical world, this series definitely gave me everything I wanted and more! I'm still scared of bigger books, but reading and listening to an audiobook at the same time definitely helps, with my concentration as well(it's not what it used to be) also me complaining about male narrators will be a constant thing because they aren't as good as women or non-binary people, it's just my personal preference and I wish we could choose, in this case the accent did help the narrator but I still prefer to have different voices telling me the story. Nothing against the people who narrate, it's just me and my brain being uncomfortable with male voices inside my head.
This book is perfect for any time of year but especially now, it's a bit spooky and quite cozy and familiar and new at the same time, fun supernatural urban fantasy with unique characters and magic system that's not too complicated and is fascinating. I rarely read series and chonky books but for this one I might make an exception.

πŸ“šπŸ—οΈLook at these cool bookish keys that I received from @skeltoncrewstudiollc 😻 they have so many more and it was not easy picking just three because I wanted all of them! They're so intricate and so well packaged in those tiny book boxes and you know a reader made them because they look so well thought out and on theme with the books they are related to. I know I will be getting all the other ones whenever I can afford them. I'm always looking for more bookish trinkets and these are perfect to display on shelves and to use in photos. I usually edit my photos to increase the saturation and contrast but these came straight from the camera. They just didn't even need anything.
Reading update, I finished undetectables yesterday, and started and finished another book today, but haven't written their reviews yet, I'll do that tomorrow and then post about them in next few days. I just really wanted to show off these cool keys!

"The autumn air wraps itself around her, tickling her skin with its clean, cool touch. Every year it feels like this kind of weather will never come, but when it does, it brings contentment like an old friend."
I love Wren, and everytime it was her chapter I would get excited, but otherwise I almost didn't finish the book because I struggled to keep my interest focused on the story. That's very rare for me, especially with these kinds of stories, and when I tried to reread the beginning to find the quote I wanted to use in my review, I realised I had completely erased most of the beginning from my mind. It's definitely not the story, I'm just not always interested in religious stuff and not every kind of religious inclusion can keep me engrossed in the book. So the book is well written, but most of the chapters narrated by men lost me every single time(unless it was Jeremy, but he also lost me most of the time) until I came to an end. I don't DNF books, because I can't sleep properly not knowing how it ends and if the ending was worth the book. This time it was! The ending was perfect! I thought I loved it before the epilogue and then epilogue chilled me to my bones and got me excited for these books all over again. I feel like I need one more book with more Wren to enjoy this series fully, because it's a very interesting story, dark and chilly and I hate that I got stuck in a slump during most of it because of my aversion to most male narrators. Something in me is being bored by men so easily, fictional or not, I just can't help it. It might seem a problem for someone, but for me there's an easy solution, I'll just have to read mostly queer and women centered books preferably narrated by women or non-binary people because they have never bored me so far.
I hate to say it, but that PR box that publisher sent out to some readers would have been so cool if I received it too, it could have influenced me to bump up the rating, because I'm that easy to impress and to bribe(not that boxes are bribes, but they definitely sweeten the reading journey)

"...being dead really messes up your sense of time..."
πŸ’€πŸ‘»πŸΎπŸ»πŸ’…πŸ»
This was such a fun and at times gory book, I laughed and I teared up and I cringed sometimes because, well they are teenagers, they do sometimes say something cringey and it all made me enjoy the story even more. I honestly didn't expect to love this possession story this much, but I love ghosts and death always intrigued me so I had to read it. Can you blame me judging this book by it's cover? It's such a cool art! I loved the queer parts and questioning the gender identity and Jennifer's body reference was awesome and the characters were so real and most were likable and lovable. And there's cats and kittens! Even though there's scenes where Schuyler had to kill and eat woodland animals because of her spirit's uncontrollable evilness, I appreciated that she regretted killing every single animal. Also I approved of her killing the predator and nasty men.
I read an ARC and listened to the audiobook and I'm glad I did because apparently I was pronouncing Schuyler differently in my head and narrator did amazing job with character voices.
I loved the epilogue so much and it was a perfect ending. In the end these teenagers did surprise me with how they treated eachother, that was a nice dynamic.
Oh and chapter titles made me excited too, nice little tidbits of pop-culture references.
One thing I want to complain about is that we didn't get more scenes with the kittens! And I think I want a sequel and without spoiling anyone, I'd love to see these characters in the future and how they deal with life after the book ended. Wouldn't mind a Ghost CBS kind of show if they ever decide to adapt it, because that's my favourite show and I know this will turn out fun too.
Thank you @coloredpagesbt @bloomsburybooksus and @justinepwinans for my review copy and for including me in this virtual tour! I enjoyed this experience immensely!

"The darkness in there is the darkness between the stars."
πŸ’€
Finished reading the night guest and the main character that some people told me was vegan, is actually vegetarian(questionable since she wears wool and leather) and people around her blame her for not eating meat just because she has low energy and can't sleep properly. Even though I want more vegan characters, I think I like that she was kinda vegetarian here, it's not a big part of the story and there was a moment when she said she put on wool sweater(even as vegetarian I remember I never wanted to wear animals or advertise if I even was wearing something old that I already owned) so in a way, I prefer her being described that way because well, reasons. I don't think I can say much about the plot, the story is short and fast-paced with short chapters and the main character is quite relatable at times, unhinged and confusing at others. I wanted to know so badly what was going on.
content warning: There's horrible scenes where cats are described being killed, quite descriptive with blood and I hated those parts. Until very last pages I was so confused about what exactly was happening, and then it all made sense but the ending is vague and even if I think I know what and how it all ended, I'd love to know exactly. That was frustrating, but to be fair, fits the book.
There's quite heavy drinking going on and I wanted to shake IΓ°unn and tell her to drink less.
The cats though, why did it have to be those poor sweet cats, I was mostly still confused about who did that to them and why, but why the cats :(
Still giving it five stars, very atmospheric and well written (and translated) horror, I'll be reading more books by this author (but won't forgive her for the cats)

πŸ“š Women in Translation month stack πŸ“š
I was almost late, but I'm glad I still managed to post this. It took me a while to find all of these books because my house is a mess(so am I) and I honestly thought I had more books by translated women, apparently this is all I have(this situation needs improving)
I have read and loved them all, except night guest which I'm reading right now and it's already creepy, so I'm already seeing myself loving this too.
These are mostly horror books, some of my favourite authors and some of their best books. I have also read earthlings by Sayaka Murata, but I don't have a copy and I want it on my shelves! And dead weight by Hildur Knútsdóttir, I'd love to read and own that book as well.
❓ QotD: have you read these or any other books written by women that were translated into English? Any favourites? Or any on your TBR? by @ameliaveganreader

β€œThey will fail to acknowledge that sometimes the devil is just a human who wants to inflict pain. He’s not some entity to summon or some demon to combat. He’s your neighbor. He’s a teacher. He’s a police officer. Humans are the real rulers of hell.”
― Alaina Urquhart, The Butcher Game
πŸπŸ’€πŸ“š
Two years ago I read first book, the butcher and the wren and loved it, it was perfectly creepy and disturbing at that time in my life, brought me some chill during hot summer. I'd say the sequel for me was weaker, there were some cool scenes but mostly it didn't feel like I was back in that world. I did struggle a little, because I kept getting distracted by work and also it wasn't keeping my attention as I'd hoped it would. This isn't a negative review, this is just to say that the first one was better for me. I already started reading third book and so far it already seems like the second one. But I'm too curious about how it all ends to not finish, I can't sleep properly without finding out everything.

❓ QotD: have you ever read a sequel and couldn't get fully into the story? Or tell me how many books you read this year and if you enjoyed most of them? by @ameliaveganreader

β€˜If it does not bring great peace to the eternal flower of your soul, discard it!’
πŸͺ·βœ‚οΈπŸ‘ƒπŸ»πŸ‘οΈπŸ‘‚πŸ»πŸͺ·
If you ever felt personally attacked when one very influential person said to keep your clutter to minimum and only keep not more than 30 books, then you might like this little Japanese horror story. Or not, it depends on how strong your mental state and stomach are. This story isn't about her, but I still kept seeing Marie Kondo when I was reading.
It took me about 40 minutes(cats were distracting me) to read this short story about unhinged woman who removes everything from her life that doesn't bring her great peace, including her body parts, she removes them while recording for others to see and does this to improve her life. It took me longer to take and edit these photos that it took to read the book. I knew it would be bloody and gory and disgusting, but it was getting worse and worse and in such a few pages it somehow turned into a disaster that her family got to witness and that's not even the worst part that happened.
This isn't for everyone, this is a vomit-inducing novelette about extreme minimalism going wrong and yet I couldn't stop reading and was mesmerized until the very end. As a slob and a hoarder, whose house would give Noriko a heart attack or brain aneurysm, I just hated everything about this book, and yet I will proudly display it on my chaotic shelf, as a trophy, tidying up actually makes me want to cut off my limbs and take out my eyes too, so in a way, this will never happen to me if I keep being messy. Ha! That's my takeaway from this, anyway.
This copy was gifted to me by the author @klauskinion and I'm thankful and glad I was chosen, because otherwise I might not have been brave enough to stick my nose(!) in this story. I did end up buying ebooks from different websites, so I feel less bad for making him send the book to me from UK.

βœŒπŸΌπŸ“šTwo for Tuesday, but make it a freshly baked trilogyπŸ“š
I loved villains duology year ago, and I know I will love the entire trilogy when I finally get to read third book Victorious, which comes out in October. Near death experience giving people superpowers, are you kidding? That's the coolest concept, my two interests: death and superpowers.
So far I haven't read Schwab book that I haven't liked, I still have several other books by her that I want to read, and everything she writes just sounds so unique and familiar, at the same time.
It's been a while since I last read an ARC of any book, it was bothering me just because I couldn't reread it again after publication day(because si many books and just one of me) I felt like there could have been some changes in the finished copy and I would miss out on some details and that wasn't working for me. Even though I've read and loved so many ARCs before, it's just not what I want to be doing now. I still get jealous when I see early copies get sent to some cool readers.

"Hollywood has traditionally given us so few iconic female horror villains, and nearly all of them became what they were after being brutalized by men or possessed by male demons."
πŸ”ͺπŸ©ΈπŸ‘οΈπŸ“šπŸͺ°
I finally have a dark romance I liked. Jokes aside, my second book by C.J and I will definitely be reading everything she writes, because I'm in love, and a bit terrified.
I was so afraid to start reading this book, mostly because years ago I was in a kind of bookclub and they mentioned the eggs being used sexually and I was appalled and disgusted and when I finally read it, that part turned out to be even more disgusting than I thought. And that's not the only part that's repulsive. But this book is also beautiful, in a gruesome way, it's GOREgeous and it's bloody and it's just so fresh, we need more female serial killers that aren't formed from their loss or some traumatic event. We just need more Maeves traumatising mediocre men as they go through life.
I wouldn't call it my favourite or recommend to just anyone, but I would love if there were more stories like this and even wouldn't mind to watch an adaptation.
I didn't expect to tear up in the end, I dare even say I felt bad for that ending. After 80% the book was nonstop violence, I was mesmerized.
"...human life is always punctuated with death.”
Maeve is truly iconic and unhinged.
As usual, lots of triggers, so always check content warnings.
Scroll to see the trope that I never thought I'd see in my horror books. I guess I can finally say I liked hockey romance πŸ˜‚
❓ QotD: if you haven't read this yet, would you read or watch horror with a female serial killer?
Or, have you ever been to Disneyland and if yes which princesses did you meet? If not which one would you like to meet?
