Happy Writer Wednesday my fellow creatives.

Today I give you The Magic Man’s Special Edition cover. The original Pain Eater’s companion cover.

Didn’t think I was gonna? Of course I was.

Isn’t she pretty?

Though this book, The Magic Man, is Magic Man centered, it is still Sadie’s story. I created this companion cover to don a much wiser Sadie; an eyes open Sadie. The Sadie who has to face challenges much darker than those she faced in The Pain Eater.

Excerpt (Sadie’s Aspect):
“It’s been two years since Sadie found one of the Magic Man’s victims, Maxine Powell. With her growing abilities and her dad’s notes she believes finding the missing women is her destiny. When her health takes a dark turn, Adrian and Lupita urge her to take a step back. She reluctantly agrees. But after she starts receiving mental messages from one of the victim’s six-year-old son, she questions whether her hiatus is a good idea. If she answers his call will she find one more victim, or move closer to becoming a victim herself?”

I love this cover which also stars my daughter as Sadie, and has elements of The Magic Man, his darkness, crows (iykyk), and the high desert where the books are based.

This Special Edition Cover will be made available on May 17th.

Happy creating!

Ever since Sami (@samiarnett_art ) drew the amazing cover for The Magic Man I have been wanting her to draw a companion cover for The Pain Eater. So last year I “commissioned“ her to do just that.

After a few concepts and reflections on who Sadie is and what could represent her power and journey of self-discovery, Sami got to work. It took her 58 scattered hours of drawing from October - March…and voila, we give you this beautiful digital art piece purely from Sami’s imagination.

Let me tell you a little about each element:

Dreamcatchers are spiritual means of protection that stave off negative energies and filter bad dreams so people can sleep. I won’t say who this represents, for it’s a major spoiler to anyone who hasn’t read The Pain Eater, but there is a prevalent dream walker in Sadie’s life.

The white feathers represent protection, hope and new beginnings. When coupled with dreamcatchers they are the channel through which good dreams travel to their intended person.

The polaroids represent Sadie’s need for mentorship. All that she can’t see. All that she will.

The playing cards represent Sadie’s childhood and greatest loves, Adrian and her Mother.

The hummingbirds represent transformation and Sadie’s ability to adapt to the changes that are unfolding.

The arms represent the ghosts of the Magic Man’s victims reaching up to Sadie; their need to be found, remembered, and relieved. They represent death and the monster which transformed her family.

The gardenias, normally a white flower, are stained with the blood of The Magic Man’s victims.

The Galaxy represents the Universe and her mother always watching over her.

The Magic Man is the darkness and Sadie is the light.

🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

I hope you love the new cover of The Pain Eater as much as I do. Oh, did I mention this version comes with Adrian’s notebook? (iykyk) Well, it does. This Special Edition is now available at Amazon.

Thank you so much Sami. Your talent always leaves me in awe.

We wanted the video to look like an 80s music video.

Happy Monday!
Today I give you the prologue from book 3 (Title Reveal) The Lovers.

The Lovers, not as intensely dark as The Magic Man but intense nonetheless. An excursion through the many facets of love, from the wonderment and passion, to the healing, scarring and transcendent freeing-of-self through love.

Sadie will find all she is meant to find.

Please enjoy this reading of— Tick Tock.

Have a beautiful Monday. 🌸

Happy Flashback Friday

Nature vs Nurture is the theme throughout The Magic Man. In regards to nature I believe there are those people who are just born bad, and even with great nurturing parents their true nature is to cause chaos and mayhem—inherently evil.

I always think about the 1956 film I watched as a kid, The Bad Seed, or the tragic story of Nancy Spungen (Sid & Nancy) who, (as told by her mother in her book And I Don’t Want To Live This Life), was just a bad kid that became an even worse adult.

And in the case of nurture, there are plenty of kids who were “bad” in their youth, but turned over a new leaf due to their great nurturing home life, so much so you’d never believe they were ever considered a bad apple.

In my book The Magic Man, I explore the ideal that when you’re inherently evil, as is The Magic Man, no amount of nurturing or good magic will change your desire to do terrible things, sans survival.

Excerpt:
“Hurting others came easily for the boy. It took more effort for him not to, for him to quell the urge and look inward instead—not that he ever did. Try and move through the anger, his mom always told him. But he liked how the anger felt like embers burning in the pit of his stomach. He loved how hurting others made him feel, superior, accomplished, powerful. He knew life wasn’t a game. But he liked making it a game. He couldn’t help it. He felt antipathy most of the time. Making everything a challenge, especially challenges which brought out the anger in others, made him feel satisfied.”

—The Magic Man: Smile 1982
