POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
In June, the CCE Fisheries Team is doing research in the commercial monkfish fishery. The past 3 days I got to tag along with the crew of the F/V Lady K to collect data on the fishery 15 miles south of Montauk. Many more at-sea days to come, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of these hideous (but delicous) fish. by @amercado497

Going through some photos from last year and came across this one. No editing or filters, just the early season deer woods at their finest

Some cool sea life from my recent bottom trawl survey trip with @cce_fisheries.

Our seasonal trawl survey is used to identify potential changes in population along one of the export cable routes south of Long Island. Winter trips are usually our lowest yield (most fish go deeper in the winter) but we still catch a few interesting ones.

All these fish were weighed, measured and released.

For those interested:Atlantic cod, winter flounder, summer flounder, American lobster, winter skate, 3-spine stickleback, rock crab, sand shrimp, spider crab by @amercado497

So it's been a busy few months, but I'm gonna start sharing some photos from our July Alaska trip...

While fishing wasn't one of our focuses on this trip, we wanted to go at least a few times (who goes to Alaska and doesn't go fishing at least once?!)

On our drive down to Seward, we met up with Ryan Schuman from @alaska_bha at the salmon hatchery he runs. Ryan was kind enough to give us a tour of the facility and provide some insight into Alaskan fisheries management.

After speaking to Ryan to see what our best bet would be for catching fish, we decided to try out "combat fishing" in Seward targeting sockeye salmon one day, and then a hike-in sub-alpine lake for grayling the next.

Fishing was slow, but we had a blast trying to target these unfamiliar species in a truly wild place. I'll be honest...Catching the small grayling in the last picture was one of the most exciting parts of our trip for me.

Big shoutout to Ryan and Mary from @alaska_bha for the recommendations - it's awesome to be part of a national network of dedicated, conservation-minded folks.

A small sea scallop from our spring survey research trip. We don't catch many of these where we conduct the survey so its pretty cool to see one.

Stoked to announce that I have been voted onto the Board of Directors for @newyorkbha

Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA) is a non-profit organization focused on promoting and preserving public hunting and fishing access throughout the country. The New York chapter works to protect the access rights of NY hunters and anglers, monitors legislation and helps educate the public about access, conservation and wildlife management. I'm happy to be involved with this great group of dedicated conservationists and learning from them along the way.

If you're interested in joining BHA, or getting involved in upcoming local events, check out the link on their profile (or DM me). We have some Long Island events in the works!
