Bonjour! We’ve spent the last 8-9 days in Southwest France - an area we selected especially so that we could visit some of the caves with prehistoric art inside. We visited Font de Gaume (the first two slides), Pech Merle (slides 3-5), and the recreation at Lascaux IV. The paintings (and carvings/etchings) are so fresh and descriptive and timeless. The way the artists use the bulge of the cave walls to give mass and body to their paintings. The unexpected way images are layered and layered - different scales, different methods, different species one on top of the other. The mystery of why so few people are depicted, why no plants, why did people over 10s of thousands of years go in caves and paint these animals? Wooly mammoths! The scratches on the inner walls of now-extinct cave bears. I found the whole experience beautiful, inspiring, poignant, thought provoking. So so so grateful for this opportunity. #fontdegaume #pechmerle #lascaux by @amey.mathews

Fellow Creatures is a virtual exhibition bringing together work by Amey Fearon Mathews, Sarah McDowell, and Lisa Knoop as part of Fall of Freedom 2026.

The exhibition began with a question:
What does tenderness make possible in a time of fear, division, and hardening?

Across human, animal, and abstract bodies, the works move through touch, dependence, vulnerability, tension, care, and connection.

Wow! What an honor to have my piece included in this wonderful show at @santacruzmah ! I am humbled and delighted to be included alongside so many spectacular artists. Really inspiring to see all the creations, techniques, expressions and approaches to working with clay! I met so many of the artists - what a special experience. And the way the works by different artists are grouped and presented together is just wonderful. Really delighted to see my work alongside pieces with such kindred sensibilities. The opening tonight was packed! What a fun vibe! by @amey.mathews

While my studio space is under construction, at least I can still draw my pets! I keep three small sketchbooks on my coffee table, alongside a collection of drawing tools. Each pet has their own sketchbook- although sometimes there is some infiltration. I’ve learned so much from working quick, freely, from life (vs from a photo). I try to do at least one drawing a day, but it doesn’t always come to pass. Some days I draw more than one! First is Cosmo the Worm, then Footie, then Garbanzo Ben. ♥️

Today I ended up looking through piles of old work… which is always a fascinating process. These pieces, spanning across so many years and phases of my life/creative experience resonated with me today. So I thought I’d share them. by @amey.mathews

A small show in Chicago!

This show represents drawings made from weekly drawing exercises done together as a group over the course of many months — using the book Ways of Drawing by the @royaldrawingschool as a foundation. Together we made drawings that were fresh and awkward and new and exciting. An extremely fruitful conversation together. ♥️🙏🏻

Ack! Total studio upheaval!

I came home from South Africa filled with vigor and enthusiasm - eager to refresh and renew my small “art corner.” My vision was to make it a bit larger, buy a larger table, and hopefully make space to work on 2-3 things at once. I also really wanted to open up my access to the wall space.

I got to work and things were moving along, until I discovered mold under the baseboards (our garage floods every time it rains hard… so not a huge surprise). Now, we have mold remediation folks coming to tear out the sheetrock, clean it all up… then we’ll need a contractor to rebuild the torn-up walls… and then we’ll need a contractor to finally address the flooding issues! Womp womp!

I was just confessing to a friend that I have been sulking a bit… but I guess I’ll just pick up a little sketchbook and work with what I’ve got for now. Wish me luck! One day I will have a beautiful space with room to work larger and then I’ll really be off to the races!!! by @amey.mathews

Cape Town Art Fair! I loved getting to go to the Art Fair with Katherine when I was in Cape Town. I don’t get the opportunity to see big contemporary art events very often, so this was super exciting and thought-provoking. And especially soothing and fascinating to see in all from an Africa-centric world view and with very few, if any, traces of America.

It was so great to see the work of several of my friends at the Fair!

- @katherineglenday and her luminous porcelain entities
- @cathyjaneabraham ‘s beautiful, contemplative brushstrokes
- the temptation to touch @nicolabaileystudio ‘s marble paw!!
- our mutual teacher #roseshakinovsky ‘s delicate painting
- @josephinegrindrod - I loved looking at her visual journals

And then I’ve included some other images of works that caught my eye. I’ll try to tag them where I can. by @amey.mathews

One of the highlights of my whole trip was getting to spend time and have studio visits with a couple of my beloved South African art pals - Cathy Abraham @cathyjaneabraham and Nicci @nicolabaileystudio

Cathy rolled out her beautiful pieces for an upcoming solo show (and she has one in NYC in the fall too). So special to see her studio; her garden, her dogs, her kiddos, her life in situ. Seeing her life helped me see her work in a deeper context. She is such a bright gem and I’m so grateful for our friendship.

♥️

Later that same day, we had a lovely and delicious dinner with @nicolabaileystudio and @emmajvandermerwe So exciting to see Nicci’s gorgeous new studio space and her huge paintings in person. And to meet her legendary doggies!! I love this picture of Nicci and Katherine and me admiring one of Nicci’s sculptures (photo by Emma!) I feel such kinship with Nicci and her work about tenderness and shared intimacy between humans and dogs.

This time deepening my friendships was so special for me. Thanks for making time during busy art week, beloved pals!! by @amey.mathews

Oh my heart. The African Penguin!

Sleek, shiny, small, waddly on land and lighting-fast under water. Fluffy youngsters and silvery grown ups. Katherine wisely anticipated my capacity to stare at penguins, so she dropped me off at Boulders Beach, and I spent about four hours with a towel over my head to protect myself from the sun - observing and celebrating and drawing these beings.

I just love drawing creatures from life - I draw my pets almost every day. But different than drawing my pets, drawing a creature you don’t yet know or understand well is so fascinating. Real-time learning, studying. Drawing makes you actually look and understand. It’s such a sacred moment.

This was my first time seeing penguins in the wild. They were hot that day, and the rangers were watching the youngsters for signs of heat exhaustion (in which case they would step in and help). It was so lovely to watch them rest, dig in the sand, go for a swim, duck around in the water… This was a special day!

During my time in Cape Town, @katherineglenday got me all set up with a big beautiful piece of paper, in her big beautiful studio, and I had two weeks to draw and go away and come back and stand back and look again. Creatures came into being and then went back into the ether. I love the final drawing … working to create a little more space and room for quietude for these interspecies resters. It’s been a long time since I had room to work large and step back… so this special experience has inspired me to reorganize my studio area at home… and make a bit more space for my thoughts and my work.@ameyfm by @amey.mathews

Two new pieces finished this week, from my ongoing series of “Interspecies Rest.”

I wanted pieces that felt a bit sloppy, precarious, unstable… but still containing moments of stillness, precision, and tenderness… which is a pretty direct parable for how life feels these days.
