Fellow Creatures is a virtual exhibition bringing together work by Amey Fearon Mathews, Sarah McDowell, and Lisa Knoop as part of Fall of Freedom 2026.

The exhibition began with a question:
What does tenderness make possible in a time of fear, division, and hardening?

Across human, animal, and abstract bodies, the works move through touch, dependence, vulnerability, tension, care, and connection.

Don’t really know what to say or do these days except to keep trying to get healthier within myself amidst the chaos in my art studio and the world. I’m all over the place with my creative experiments and just trying to keep noticing what I’m doing with my mind. Trying to keep reclaiming some mental sovereignty. I’m not there yet. But my wonderful friend @amey.mathews @ameyfm was wearing a T-shirt the other day that simply said “peace is power”, a Yoko Ono quote. That has stuck with me. Thank you Amey. May peace be in you…and me…even if just for moments at a time✌️.

Oh my heart. The African Penguin!

Sleek, shiny, small, waddly on land and lighting-fast under water. Fluffy youngsters and silvery grown ups. Katherine wisely anticipated my capacity to stare at penguins, so she dropped me off at Boulders Beach, and I spent about four hours with a towel over my head to protect myself from the sun - observing and celebrating and drawing these beings.

I just love drawing creatures from life - I draw my pets almost every day. But different than drawing my pets, drawing a creature you don’t yet know or understand well is so fascinating. Real-time learning, studying. Drawing makes you actually look and understand. It’s such a sacred moment.

This was my first time seeing penguins in the wild. They were hot that day, and the rangers were watching the youngsters for signs of heat exhaustion (in which case they would step in and help). It was so lovely to watch them rest, dig in the sand, go for a swim, duck around in the water… This was a special day!

First Friday INCOMING! ⚡️ We’re in the final days for FLAT RATE - come by and see it before it’s gone! 💌 The show closes on Sunday, November 9.

The Radius Annex wall is also filled this month with work by the late Fanne Fernow. ⚡️ Fanne was a long time Tannery artist and resident whose art is loaded with meaning. She used texture and text to speak about the nature of survival and the “search for the holy.” Her encaustic paintings and copious dots and circles were used to create prayers and meditations and were constant themes throughout her lifetime as an artist. 🔵

➡️ Gallery hours this week are Wednesday-Sunday from 12-5pm. Special hours for First Friday until 8pm. Located at the Tannery Arts Center, 1050 River St, Studio 127.

FLAT RATE Artist Spotlight - Amey Matthews ⚡️Amey is currently showing “Interspecies Rest,” a mixed media body of work using acrylic, graphite, colored pencil, conte, and charcoal.

She says, “The unlikely pile of animals and humans precariously resting together captured a world I wanted to be in at that moment: interwoven, tender, quiet, heavy.” With the theme of rest at its core, Amey’s pieces represent the vulnerability of both letting go willingly or forcibly to the inevitable. 💌

“I love when the marks lead to strange bedfellows … to celebrate the value of all beings, and also to push the imagination to create the conditions of fatigue, trust, or collaboration that would lead these beings to be at rest together peaceably, with tenderness and intimacy.”

💌Pop by the gallery this weekend to see these beautiful works along with many others in paper, metal and ceramics. FLAT RATE is on display through November 9. Wednesday-Sunday, 12-5pm.

For this benefit sale, my heart turned toward the concept of “tending” to one another. These images are studies of a sculpture in the Vatican collection (from the Sala degli Animali) of two Italian greyhounds. Purportedly, it is a 17th century copy of a Roman sculpture. The duo are a bit ungainly and awkward, which somehow emphasizes their tenderness together.

Amey Mathews is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Santa Cruz, CA. Her works explore themes of intimacy and coexistence between human and other animal beings. She is particularly inspired by her devotion to Yoga, which she has been studying, practicing, and teaching since the 1990s.

Art sale to benefit Doctors Without Borders goes live Sunday, October 12 at 11AM EST. #arts4action #doctorswithoutborders @doctorswithoutborders @amey.mathews

Honestly. The number of extremely fun and cool comments I got on my spider rescue post just confirmed that I obviously have amazing friends. High fives everyone! I thought I’d share my drawings that I mentioned - these are just little sketches that I keep on my studio wall … My title for these drawings is “Our Salvation”. Animals that carry their young, carrying human babies instead. Lately I’ve been thinking I need to do them with a mix of human and nonhuman young…. Anyway, thanks for celebrating cool spider moms with me! 🕷️
