life dump ft. shared kai, local artists, festivals, kanikani, mixed cultures, solidarity, poetry, friends, packed cars, community, rest, nature and so much aroha ✨🪷🌀🦋

not pictured: the questioning, openness to lessons and constant realignments to the ever evolving versions of myself, functional freeze when there are a lot of decisions to make, the long hours on my devices, and the knowing that the highs and lows are all part of this 🤌🏽🌍🔁 taken in Aotearoa by @amitakala

📣 “A lot can shift online but seeing us in a room is powerful ... just seeing somebody that looks like you take up space and love themselves, it really gives you permission to do the same.”

Amita Kala (@amitakala) is the founder of Aunty's House (@auntysh0use) - a new collective focussed on celebrating and uplifting the South Asian diaspora in New Zealand. Envision a place to come together, enjoy good company, and indulge in the ultimate comforts of chai and spicy snacks - and you’ll have the essence of it.

She chats to RNZ's Jogai Bhatt (@jogaibhatt) about how the collective was dreamt up - and how it came to life with a launch event called Chai Session in July. 💭☕️

2025 recap 📸

Not only did I go blonde… I also shaved my head?! ✂️
If those two drastic shifts don’t sum up the year, I don’t know what does 😤

The year began with finally starting the book ‘Discovering the Inner Mother’ tending to my nervous system, confronting repeating patterns, downloading ClassPass, and reclaiming joyous movement (I legit cried at my first gym session because I’d missed that body connection for so long 😭💞🏋🏽‍♀️)

So proud to be part of an exquisite exhibition 🌈 months of hard work paying off, alongside big universe lessons on boundaries and learning how to receive

I walked my first runway (‼️) redefining beauty, bathed in the arts celebrating local talent, performed a comedy sketch, booked cool modeling campaigns, and featured in a fashion editorial all while learning how to let go of people who no longer fit and not making it mean I’m the villain 🥲

New energetically significant tattoos, spiritual healers, time spent in wāhine-led community spaces, and DJing across so many creative hubs 🎶📣 gratitude for the experiences and for connecting with incredible Aotearoa artists 🤌🏽🥝

I was featured in a documentary series on plus-size models, published an article on the power of lyrics, applied for funding (and got rejected), went to Vipassana, attended Te Tiriti o Waitangi workshops, and showed up at protests ✊🏾🌊

Took intentional time away from Aunty’s House, went through heavy shifts of depression and sadness, spent time with friends, shared vulnerability, asked for what I needed 🥹💞 and learning how to take care of myself + cooking so many nourishing plant-based meals that truly fuel my soul 👩🏽‍🍳🦋

Grateful. Changed. Still becoming. ✨

Special shoutout to Ginger for the endless love, laughter and adventures 🫚🐶🐾 taken in Aotearoa by @amitakala

For every woman told to shrink, this one’s for you. 🎥 Watch RNZ #CuttingTheCurve now.

Earlier this year I was asked to be part of this incredible doco-series exploring fashion, fatphobia and the industry behind curating what determines ‘beauty’ 👀

Now even though I call myself a fat goddess; for most of my life I felt unworthy because I was fat, and I don’t need to expand on why - I know so many of us can relate to the subliminal (and loud) messages society feeds us 🥲

But something I wish I shared in the interview was that my big aha moment came from my decolonisation journey, when I learnt fatphobia is rooted in racism‼️

Marketing truly is a weapon and when messaging is corrupted with colonisers hating Black bodies (plus a heavy dash of capitilasm and misogyny) it’s no wonder diet culture stays alive and hungry 🍽️

As someone who deeply understands marketing this was the key to unlocking my perception shift, that we can quite literally redefine our perception of beauty and as a matter of fact: I AM WORTHY OF BEING SEEN 📣📣📣

After starting my career as a fashion stylist, becoming a model in 2023 has been life changing and even though I haven’t fully healed from fatphobia, I’m so proud of my journey and contributions to reclaiming myself 😭

Huge shoutout to the series protagonist Isabella Moore (@isabellamoore_) an iconic Samoan Kiwi model I’ve adored witness taking up space and giving so many of us the representation we needed to heal from colonisation 🙌🏽 + loved hearing from fellow plus models like Kaarina Parker (@kaarina.parker) and Sarah-Jane Duff (@lostandledastray) who was the first designer to book me 🥹🫶🏽
