SCULPTING WAYS OF LIVING
How Bushidō taught us to sculpt ourselves before we sculpt the world.

Architecture is a practice of constant refinement.
We spend our lives shaping spaces, resolving details, and searching for better ways to build. But before we can refine our craft, we must refine ourselves.
Through Bushidō, we explored discipline, presence, courage, humility, and mastery, not simply as principles of the warrior, but as disciplines that can guide the architect.

Each exercise became a reminder that the architecture we create is ultimately a reflection of who we are.

We practiced a single stroke, over and over again. Not to make the movement complicated, but to make the simple precise. To quiet the mind, discipline the body, and understand that mastery is built through repetition.

Throughout the retreat, we returned to the teachings of Miyamoto Musashi, words written centuries ago, yet remarkably relevant to the discipline of the architect today. His philosophy became a quiet thread running through our reflections, training, and conversations.

The following images capture some of those moments, each accompanied by a teaching from Musashi that resonated with our journey.

Before we sculpt spaces, we sculpt ourselves.
Before we master the craft, we master the self.

Normalize learning outside the classroom.

10 days in the mountains of Puerto Princesa. Arrived knowing no one. Left belonging to a community.

Building with earth, lime, bamboo, and the materials around us revealed a different way of creating. Once you learn to build with nature, the possibilities become endless.
