Moonstones, by me; for mom

There’s no question I would have quit violin many times were it not for my mom’s position that I needed to learn an instrument growing up. She was unequivocal on the matter! There was no swaying her! And I know this because, not infrequently, I tried. I didn’t like practicing, and there were other things I wanted to do more. She would have nothing of it! When I turned 18, she finally yielded, and I put the violin away. Almost a decade later, I made my way back to it, and found I had enough muscle memory to relearn and return to playing. Thank god because it turns out that in adulthood, playing fiddle music is the place where, without exception, I find peace. It’s hard to overstate what a gift this is.

I’m realizing maybe all along it’s exactly what she had in mind. 🌜✨ by @amy_onstage

The Birch Tree by me 🌳

I have loved the poem Birches by Robert Frost for a long time, and I didn’t know until reading it about the past-time of climbing up the narrow trunks until they bend and swoosh you back down to the ground. Watch some vids; it looks very fun! Apparently the trunks are flexible enough to bend but strong enough not to break. It’s a beautiful poem, and it inspired this song. by @amy_onstage

Legendary Love: Voltaire and Emilie
Music by Sally Coenen
Libretto by Keller Freeman

My mom and Keller have been composing music together for something like forty years??! This was the third installment of their “Legendary Love” stories, and in a real nepo baby move, I got to join in as the narrator and gossip Madame Bavarde. I showed up a few hours before the show all set to read my part, but as is often its way, live theater had some surprises up its sleeve. Our poor Voltaire was voiceless c/o the flu 😱!! I have never learned and then performed an art song in under 2 hours, but there’s a first time for everything! If I could go back and tell my younger self to care a little more than not-at-all in her music lessons about learning to count rhythm, I would! by @amy_onstage

My cup runneth over with happiness and gratitude to have landed among this group tackling this beautiful beast of a show. We really did it! To my stage sisters, in particular: how I will treasure the time we shared! Even the moments we feared our brains might implode; maybe especially then actually. Yip! 💕❤️ by @amy_onstage

When the inimitable duo, titans of sublime harmony, songwriting GOATS aka @indigogirlsmusic invite their fans to record a cover of their music, you oblige!!! This song “Fly Away,” from their 2006 album Despite Our Differences, a no skips record, kept me company during the transition out of college and into the “real world”, not an especially easy season! It was also one of the first songs I would use to practice singing and playing the piano at the same time. It’s such a beauty and I will never get tired of it. Thank you, Emily and Amy!

p.s. stay for the end to see what @claire.coenen and I dressed up as for Halloween last year you’ll never guess by @amy_onstage
