/Her Abstract Painting/
An embodiment of slow, repetitive and meditative act of basketry coiling that intentionally contradicts the immediacy of an abstract brush stroke yet retains its intuitive, unpredictable, and expressive nature.

This piece questions the hierarchy of value existing between ‘craft’ and ‘fine art’, while its malleable quality enables its form to respond to human touch, situating itself as an equal to the audience.

Since revisiting the craft of cordage making and using it as a gesture of ‘wishful thinking & making’ at @csm_exchange earlier this year, I’ve been reflecting a lot on how my engagement with ancient crafts has served my needs of having a sense of security, self-agency, and belonging, especially during uncertain times of migration over the past few years.

In the middle of packing away my studio in London, I sensed this familiar urge of making something with my own hands.. with so much still left to do, I began making a cordage as my memories of how this space grew and transformed flowed through my mind. I chose colours of yarns to represent what I’ve learned, felt, and received from being in this space and the people who visited .. there was this surge of gratitude running through as the cordage was taking form through and within my hands..

As I finished the cordage, it was as if a tangible closure has been made, one that’s full of blessings. Holding it made me realise that perhaps I’ve learned what I needed to learn from this chapter in London.. and perhaps it’s about time that I carry this thread of embodied knowledge somewhere that needs it.

It’s often in times like this that makes me realise how resilient and powerful it is to make with our own hands and to be held by ancient knowledge of making that makes us human.

‘Talking Hat’ by Shane Waltener with @csm_exchange members and @fashion_textiles_ual_fad students
repurposed mixed materials
.
Recreation of a Shaman’s hat worn in North East Essex, dating back to the Late Iron Age.
Folklore has it that when these magic hats were handed over to members of the Belgic tribes (a confederation of Celts and Gauls) migrating to Britain, the wearer of the hat could be understood by the local population.
The use of these hats during successive waves of migration by the Nervii, Atrebates, Eburones, Remi and Bellovaci generated new knowledge and led to a significant expansion in trade as well as many cultural developments that include the first native coinage.
As with @amychenfly’s pieces in the opposite window (see previous post), Talking Hat is both a sculpture and an interactive and relational tool, a prop for social bonding. It is an educational tool connecting us to reimagined narratives about local history, a response to recent divisive political discourses in Tendring and a physical record of a range of heritage skills now at risk of being lost.
Both pieces are on show now and throughout ‘Between the Tides’ @waltonartsfestival September 17th to 20th.

Very happy and grateful to be invited by @shanewaltener to exhibit my beloved piece ‘Their Trusted Friend’ at @one2onegallery in dialogue with @textile_sculptor_artist Christopher Kelly’s beautiful sculpture, and later with Shane’s new work

Initially created to embody the original meaning of the word ‘Gossip’ in premodern society, a woman’s female confidante whose presence offered warmth and care during childbirth, the form and the use of colours of this piece honour and symbolise the protection of the nourishing female bond that used to carry positive light. In resonance with Chris’s continuous act of crochet to work through inner tensions, this piece came to being through repetitive yet meditative coiling, with each gesture retracing and revigorating a meaning or value in care and closeness.

The sculpture’s malleable yet resilient qualities serve another purpose. It functions as a multi-sensory prop designed to meet the self-stimulatory needs of members of Ambient Jam, an improvisational dance project developed over 30 years by a collaboration of artists and individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) at @entelechyarts

‘Their Trusted Friend’ will be on display until the end of September and will be part of the Ambient Jam archive at Entelechy Arts afterwards ✨

‘Their Trusted Friend’ by Amy Hsu Tzu Chen
 wool, galvanised wire
.
Amy’s work engages in dialogue with Chris Kelly's sculpture displayed in the opposite window until August 30th (and can be viewed @one2onegallery on Intagram thereafter) featuring an enfolding structure rooted in the theme of transformative care.
Originally conceived to represent the historical meaning of the word 'Gossip' in premodern society, a woman's confidante who provided warmth and support during childbirth, Amy’s sculpture uses form and colour to evoke care, protection, and intimacy associated with this female bond. Like Kelly’s work, Amy’s piece was created through repetitive gestures that affirm these values.
The sculpture's malleable yet resilient qualities serve another purpose. It functions as a multi-sensory prop designed to meet the self-stimulatory needs of members of Ambient Jam, an improvisational dance project developed over 30 years by a collaboration of artists and individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).
Ambient Jam is a project run by London-based arts organisation Entelechy Arts embracing uncertainty and mindfulness, creating a space where participants engage through movement, sound and sensory experience.

Tear Portraits:
an ongoing exploration of the materiality of my grief - dissolving pre-drawn paints with dropping / running tears, mark-making using the tenacity of nasal mucus, accidentally infusing sparkles left by dissolved eye shadows…

Occasion of the day:
I’m very saddened and disappointed to share that the visa application I’ve been working so hard for hasn’t been approved, and I’ll have to move back home in September. Currently, I still can’t seem to let go of the life I’ve built here in London..my first studio, the communities that appreciate me for what I do / who I am, most beautiful friendships… challenging yet unique environment that shaped my voice as an artist..

Accumulated occasions:
still grieving the losses of my parents, my friend, heartbreaks, anxiety over visa application, rejection letters, financial stress….

Gratitude:
I’m grateful for everything that has enabled me to build an art practice that can always hold me especially when in pain and can transform something inside that’s just too much to process. I’m grateful for those who have been rooting for me so much throughout this path, continuing to remind me of the impact of my work, and being warm and understanding listeners. I love you. Last but not least, I thank myself for my courage. by @amychenfly

in between the silent acts of holding, carrying, releasing, letting go, what is it that you’ve been hearing?

For the past few months, I’ve been pondering about how essential the craft of traditional basketry was to our ancestral societies, and how it can still be relevant in a way that responds to our human needs in this modern day - the need for physical touch, the need to feel and be felt, the need to stay attentive to the unfolding and the enfolding, the need for a sense of freedom and agency.

This piece is a tangible response to my contemplation. Inspired by basket weaving and coiled with malleable wire and wool yarns, the circular structure is designed to carry the freedom of being interwoven within itself into unlimited forms that respond to one’s touch, imagination, inner states… I like to think of each formation and deformation as a gestural ritual of processing something in a way that transcends the limitation of language and thinking.

What does it mean to hold a space that allows, allows our differences to co-exist in a way like holding hands, allows our vulnerabilities in non-knowing to be held with the courage to continue making wishes, allows our ‘mistakes’ to unfold organically that eventually lead to a collectively resonant roadmap…

Being a participating member of the Chrisp Street Market Exchange community project @csm_exchange from this March to May has been such an ‘opening’ experience for me - eye opening, hands opening, heart opening. I remember the first time walking into the space with my original intention to learn more about basketry and very soon realised that this space held much more than skill exchange sessions. As @shanewaltener introduced me to the ‘odd-looking’ ‘baskets’ resting on the table, how they gradually came into their current forms by being passed around within the hands of various community members over the past sessions, I saw a joyful circulation of touches in each piece, still reaching towards somewhere..rigorously..

Within each circle we sat in together throughout all the sessions, I was continuously reminded of how the nature of a circle began the origin of the very first story ‘told’ by the ancient world, through making, singing, dancing, sharing.

At this space that used to be a shoe store, with posters laying around that held city plans that never came into fruition, we absorbed and exchanged ancient crafts and knowledge from multicultural roots, we responded to the cruelty of the present with paints and movements transforming salvaged materials, we saw how our gestures can make marks, and how we can roll with them into magical beads, we scrapped our written wishes into strips, and when corded and strung together, the silent prayers began to make sound as we moved.

As we sat in our final circle, one of us began writing the beginning of a wish, and it continued to unfold as we passed it around and carried on writing it just like the ‘odd-looking’ ‘baskets’... Even though the project space has ended, I think this wish is still continuing somewhere in the air.. I have a feeling that it is still dreaming alive.. taken in Poplar, London by @amychenfly
