Truly couldn’t be prouder of what my body did this week. I don’t think there’s anything that feels as good as setting your heart on a goal and making it happen. 5 days, 42 miles along the North Country Trail, the most enormous bag of beef jerky, and a million new tiny friends. 🦟 More to come but hell yeah, what an incredible start to summer camping. ✨🏕️ taken in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore by @amyebutcher

Everyone in my family gave me a hard time this summer when I signed the trail registry that it was likely Oosk’s last ascent. I just wanted to be realistic about a fluffy Oosk body at 11 years old, what it’s capable of, but I’ve been feeling bad about it ever since, because who am I to doubt an Oosk?

Today: blue sky day so clear you could see straight through to Vermont, peak foliage, and an 11.5 year old Oosk, signing the trail registry at the top. 🐾 by @amyebutcher

Catching up with a good friend tonight, he reminded me that when you’re writing good writing, it feels like flying.

I told him I kind of forgot what it was like to be in the air.

The last few years, teaching has had my exclusive focus—helping other folks find and prime their wings. I know sabbatical is a wildly indulgent experience, and it might look like I’m moving around the country like a kid took a Crayon and scribbled across a patriotic placemat, but I’ve written more in these past two weeks than I’ve written in maybe three or four years. Every day just sitting and cranking out pages, make a good dinner, read by a fire. When I was a kid, I used to hate coming up here because there was “nothing to do.” Now that’s the point. Finally have the first chunk of something substantial and feeling so excited to be back in the air.

Good friends who span decades are life’s greatest blessing, truly. In the absence of everything, I’d always pick them. I love you dudes; you know who you are. Thanks for reminding me I still had my wings, even when grounded. 💛 by @amyebutcher

up in New Hampshire for two weeks and decided to break it up with a lil daytrip to hike in the Whites which, as you can imagine, are terrible this time of year. taken in White Mountain National Forest by @amyebutcher

I graduated college and never returned. Most haunted campus in America and, yes, for me personally, a lot of ghosts.

October 20, I’ll be back on campus for a full day of class visits, a reading, a picnic with students, and meaningful conversations about self-harm, suicide, and navigating difficult conversations with the people we love most. I’m looking forward to digging deep, jogging good memories, healing my heart a little, and connecting and thanking in person former faculty who helped me get to where I am today. If you’re in the area, or you’re one of the few current Gettysburgians I’ve connected with already, I hope you’ll come say hi.

We can listen to Phish and Wilco and Ryan Adams and Mason Jennings on blankets in the sun just like we did when I was twenty and all I wanted was to be a writer and some day have a book, a dog, and a little backyard quiet. 🧡💙🧡 by @amyebutcher
