This is our third night of faculty readings! What a treat to hear Denison professor, memoirist, and essayist Amy Butcher, @amyebutcher, who read excerpts from MOTHERTRUCKER and new work and shared words of wisdom on cultivating a life around curiosities, patience, and dogs. 🐶 🐶

“This road is a way to reinvent,” she repeats. “This highway is an act of living.” 🗻

I finished this book in one night. @amyebutcher has created an extraordinary art piece about one of the best travel-writing narratives in the heart of Alaska. Soul sisters that were brought together by God- Mothertrucker and Spice Girl. I was with them on that road, reading, listening, reflecting on the conversations between two people who had suffered but were there for one another.

Thank you @ksundber for this reading material and Amy for coming by to visit our cohort. This was truly special ❤️

In 2021, the disappearance of Gabby Petito gripped the nation. When Petito’s body was found—she’d been murdered by her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, who then took his own life—writer Amy Butcher couldn’t help feeling unsettled by all the similarities between her and Petito.

So when Netflix released a three-part docuseries on Petito last February, @amyebutcher's own painful memories of being abused came flooding back—along with a disconcerting sense of awe at the lengths to which modern technology can “resurrect” a person. The Netflix series used AI tools to recreate Petito’s voice, a storytelling technique Butcher found both moving and frightening.

Read Butcher’s essay on the ethics of this virtual revival at the link in our bio. Gabby Petito’s death, after all, was the ultimate crime of control. Was the posthumous publication of her private text messages and journal entries, and then the artificial re-creation of her voice, not further fueling her exploitation? I couldn’t help but feel that Petito’s parents, however well-intentioned they might have been, had only further exacerbated her mistreatment by consenting to the artificial creation of their dead daughter’s voice.

Day 1 of AWP was a beautiful whirlwind! Excited to share the chaos with eight talented @denisonenglish undergraduates, my marvelous colleague @amyebutcher, and my forever AWP roomie @kellygracethomas. Thanks @hila_ratzabi for this capture of me reading a new poem that nearly had me break down at @skailight's incredible WNP! Grateful to have gotten time with the one and only @our_lady_of_nod and many other poet Mamas I got to hug and hear read and not have any photos to show for it. Already up this early am working on my panel presentation for tomorrow, but today, come say hey to me at @yesyesbooks Table #546-548 between 2-4pm! Tonight at the @wickpoetry Poets for Science Reading at Maryland Science Center at 5:30, or the YesYes off-site which also starts at 5:30 (but I'll be there in the second half), at Lazarus Auditorium L115!
