“Amy Lemaire and Nicolas Touron collaborated on mixed media works for the Nature series that considers the environmental impact of humans. For this innovative partnership, Touron designed ceramic bases with modular sections in a computer program for a 3-D printing machine to build by extruding coils using clay colored with pigments. While this mechanized process is similar to hand-building, he chose not to smooth over the horizontal striations resulting from the printing process. For Nature 13, Touron was inspired by organic architecture while playfully integrating beetles, frogs and other forms. Next, Lemaire intuitively responded to the ceramic base without preconceived notions. In flameworking glass elements to complete the work, she was inspired by the changing colors of smokestacks rising from the industrial landscape at sunset, which she viewed from her Brooklyn studio. Lemaire also contemplated the fact that many glass factories have recently reformulated colors to be less toxic for the environment. As part of their environmentalist statement, Nature 13 is a unique work within the series that altogether forms a mystical garden, both terrestrial and aquatic.”

Making its first appearance in Paris, Brooklyn-based Powerhouse Arts brings together Al Held, Lauren Shapiro and Nicolas Touron in a presentation that spans ecological sculpture, postwar abstraction and experimental fabrication.

Shapiro draws on marine and botanical systems to create sculptural ceramic works inspired by the natural world. The presentation also brings the legacy of Al Held, one of the defining figures of postwar American geometric abstraction, into the conversation. Known for his monumental paintings and seemingly impossible architectural spaces, Held offers a very different perspective on form, scale and perception.
Then there’s Nicolas Touron in collaboration with glass artist Amy Lemaire. Their sculptural works combine 3D-printed porcelain with colourful borosilicate glass, creating hybrid forms where organic life and technology seem to meet. The result feels part natural history, part imagined future.

Powerhouse Arts is also bringing its expertise to the fair’s public programme. On Sunday, 25 October, from 11am to 12pm, Biata Roytburd, Ceramics Studio Director at Powerhouse Arts, will give a talk in English titled Fabricating ceramic artwork with artist estates, exploring the process of producing ceramic works in collaboration with artists’ estates.

Powerhouse Arts will be on the first floor, in Salon Rio (B17). Make time for the presentation, and stay for the conversation.

Rest in peace, Legend. Thanks for all you taught me about glass and beyond. Your generosity and care for this community were contagious, and we’re all better for having entered your orbit. You’re an inspiration.

Paul chose these pictures—they were our favorites of us. I can still hear him giggling, telling me that in one, he’s teaching me, and in the other, I’m teaching him. A true class act.
