Graphic Design majors at MECA&D take Professional Studio in their senior year. This one-semester course develops academic, technical, and employability skills in an experiential learning setting. By pairing students with a “Real World” client, such as Portland Hearts of Pine, Portland Museum of Art, or Mechanics Hall, students learn the professional standards and essential skills required to grow as creative professionals in their chosen careers.

This semester, students are working with the Portland Ballet and recently had a kick-off strategy session with their client and MECA&D Instructor, Amy Parker, Co-founder of Woods Creative. Amy shared, “Brand work is inherently collaborative and based in creative strategy. It is not about making things pretty or decorative. It's design. The designers who do well in application after they graduate understand how business works through the lens of creativity, and I help show ‘the whys’ and not just ‘the whats’ with this Real World Client experience.”

Students learn firsthand how research and client relationships begin, and what it’s actually like to work with a client. The course builds their portfolio and strengthens their career readiness, enabling them to thrive professionally.

Steal your mentors.

This is what Michael Bierut (@mbierut) encouraged me to do after watching his AIGA Design (@aigadesign) talk in 2015 called, “What I’ve Learned.”* I realized listening to him, I had already done it.

I was hired by Aaron Belyea to work at his studio Alphabet Arm (@alphabetarm) and little did he know that I was secretly stealing him and his lead designer, Ryan Frease (@ryanfreasecreative). For the interview, I distinctly remember showing up sweaty after an intense bike ride from my design class because I had exactly 8 minutes to get there. The bike ride itself was 7 minutes at a good clip. Aaron laughed, “Can I get you water?” “Yes.” I replied, still out of breath. Maybe it was the fact that we both biked, or maybe it was that we connected over Tom Waits, but I made enough of an impression to get hired. This one job would forever change the way I saw how to be a professional designer, how to lead my own practice (@woodscreative) most importantly see a future version of myself in someone else. I too could be a leader in the field.

Aaron and Ryan showed me kindness, humor and such respect not always granted with bosses, professors, or other various older adults in my life at the time. If you’ve been called “too young,” congratulations if this has happened to you too. It means you were in the arena.

I later asked Aaron to talk about his practice for a community event about branding and visual systems [Pictured], and to share wisdom he gave to me working under him. “What a privilege,” I remember thinking, to be respected by a professional, to say “yes” to an aspiring design leader. I could only hope to be like Aaron someday; as talented in design, communication and most importantly, lead every conversation with default respect for others.

So fast forward, the AIGA Boston (@aigaboston) V.0 Mentorship program (V.0 stands for “version zero”) is handed off to me to lead and build from what one of our great chapter Presidents Chiranit Prateepasen (@chiranit) began. The idea behind this to be paired with someone with the hope that mentorship, friendship and career advocacy has a shot.
