*Other Spaces* the video installation is open through October 4th at @oregoncontemporary as part of @converge_45, curated by @lumit. This install was a massive undertaking and would not be possible without the Herculean efforts of @instablakeshell @kansasrose Alan Cline and Curtis Henderson.

If you are in Portland and visit the exhibition, I’d love to hear about your experiences in the space, how the text is working with video, etc. I hope for this piece to travel so feedback would be helpful. You’ll also get to hear the haunting voice of @gemma._cf in voice over, and my own first attempt at something like a score, which is maybe more of a sketch at the moment….

Big thanks to @morganacbirch for contributing 3d animation and to @woodysullender for c4d support. Photo documentation by @mariogalluccistudio. Inflatables fabricated by @pneuhaus. And thank you to @asiseeityes for bringing it all together. taken in Oregon Contemporary by @amyruhl

OTHER SPACES: Performed on August 28th and 29th at Oregon Contemporary with Sophia Cleary (Assistant Director), Lu Yim, and Gemma Fischer as part of Converge 45, curated by Lumi Tan and Triennial directed by Amanda Donnan. What an exhilarating ride! Collaboration can be sticky, but this one has me convinced. This performance would have never come together without Sophia's voice and fortitude. Lu Yim choreographed way more than just their piece- they found our shapes and movement on stage. We all advised each other. Gemma Fischer, mind-blowing young thespian, came in without knowing any of us and was able to join the circus without a hitch

I am so grateful to all of them and also Jamie Funk for the amazing costumes you see in these photos, Pneuhaus, who gorgeously brought my inflatable designs to life with stellar fabrication, Mario Galluci for this amazing documentation, Jeff Forbes (too cool to be on instagram) for the life-saving lighting, Alan Cline, for the video projection install, Kris Geffen for audio, Kevin Ramsay and Harvestworks for help in figuring out the inflatable sound schematic, Blake Shell, Candice Bancheri, and Curtis for the amazing support from Oregon Contemporary and to Portland Oregon for being the raddest of audiences!!!! And of course, thank you to Lumi and Amanda for making this project possible.

Friends, I’ve been working on a new project. Commissioned for the 2026 Converge 45 Triennial and curated by the illustrious Lumi Tan, “Other Spaces” is both a play and a 5-channel immersive video installation at Oregon Contemporary that responds to Portland’s anarchist history by engaging the critical utopias of Ursula K. Le Guin. Using video game aesthetics as collage elements, the video presents a settler colonial reality so catastrophic it compels a drastically different political imagination for survival. Devised from conversations in a reading group that discussed Le Guin’s “The Dispossessed” against Samuel Delany’s response (“Trouble on Triton”), the play takes its premise from a minor character in the former: Tirin, a theater director who ends up in a “rehabilitation center” after performing an absurdist play. I’m honored to be performing the play on August 28 and 29th with the amazing Sophia Cleary (who is also Assistant Director), Lu Yim, and Gemma Fischer.

Many thanks to the sci fi/sf reading group which helped forge soooo much of this material: Sarah Anderson, Nicole Kaack, Kirsten Nordine, Nate Wright, Morgana Birch, Alexandro Segade and Sophia Cleary. I can’t wait for it to continue, and I hope to bring the project home to NYC (and elsewhere!) and forge new collaborations as I go.

Thank you as well to Woody Sullender for help in C4D, Matt Richards for consulting on 3D character animation, and Andrea Solstad and Jamie Funk for costume design. And to Pneuhaus for the inflatable fabrication!

sidony o’neal (Portland) is a conceptual artist and writer whose practice uses ideas from mathematics, computing, and industrial fabrication  to examine how systems of knowledge become material. For the 2026 C45 Triennial, o’neal presents a new iteration of their TANP D’ÆR/SPLINE + ELEGY   installation at Black-led music club Barn Radio, using perforated Tyvek to create an architectural surround for an ambient sound piece composed by Adee Roberson, DJ sets, and movement work by #keyongaskin . Based on the molecular structure of an insecticide associated with the 1940 Natchez Rhythm Club fire, the perforated design eulogizes histories of racialized harm and transforms them into space for healing.

Ido Radon is a Portland artist and writer whose work uses modular construction and prototyping to examine how technology and engineering organize daily life. Her Triennial project at the Center for Contemporary Art at  PNCA, Men make their own history…, is an installation of sculptural forms abstracted from the games of chess and Chutes and Ladders. Constructed from vintage Erector sets, these re-composable structures treat the games’ opposing logics of strategy and chance as a way taken in Portland, Oregon by @amyruhl

Lovely talking to Lauren Hough, whose original piece eschewed celebrity and pop references to ponder the recent surge in reading groups as a collective desire against austerity and “the erosion of institutional literary life.”

Other Spaces was performed with Sophia Cleary, who also Assistant Directed, Lu Yim, and Gemma Fischer at Oregon Contemporary, and commissioned by Lumi Tan for Converge 45/Amanda Donnan in Portland. Performance images by Mario Galluci. Lighting design by Jeff Forbes. Costumes by Jamie Funk.

While I wish this article mentioned Gemma Fischer instead of Gwyneth Paltrow, I appreciate the Willamette Week coverage as a record of an amazing performance experience.

***And thank you so much to the titular reading group (which I hope to reconvene soon, FYI!)!! Alexandro Segade, Sophia Cleary, Kirsten Nordine, Nate Wright, Morgana Birch, Sarah Anderson and Nicole Kaack***

This sound/movement collaboration with Lu Yim for Converge 45 really was one of the most fun acts of art making I’ve experienced in a long time. I’m currently putting together the complete video documentation for the performances that happened at Oregon Contemporary on August 28/29 but had to put these snippets out there for now. Documentation from @sethnehil and @mariogalluccistudio 💙💜🖤♥️💛

The inflatables were fabricated by @pneuhaus, and the sound design was created with the help of the esteemed @waynefaure2 @harvestworks, who were incredibly dope to work with.

Thank you to @lumit @converge_45 @oregoncontemporary for making it possible and most of all to @lu_yim !!!! 💥🎧🔉🔊🎙️ by @amyruhl

SCREENING ALERT: Nina Yuen, 7pm on 6/13 at the Sunview. Very excited for this, please come

In “Samantha,” artist Yuen transforms her archive of personal photographs into a meditation on female identity, aging, and artificial intelligence. The film weaves together completion and resignation in life with a darkly humorous taxonomy of female life stages, from “spooky baby” to “witch woman whose house the children run past.” Through AI technology, photographs become uncanny digital performances delivering intimate confessions about body image and self-improvement, while exploring the experience of “falling into” and “getting out of” women who are “not human.” The film takes a meta turn when it references various AI and robot characters from popular media, suggesting a parallel between these fictional artificial women and the AI-generated images of the artist herself. As versions of Yuen’s younger self converse with AI-generated “unrealpersons,” the film creates tension between authentic identity and artificial representation, critiquing how technology can transform, fragment, and reconstruct personal identity. by @amyruhl
