“Living in New York can be overwhelming, and you can get so wrapped up in being stressed out,” says Ana, as we sit down to chat with her about the fifth edition of @other.almanac

For her, a way to deal with all the chaos was to notice and observe — the small and the sweet, the tender and the overlooked.

And that’s what inspired The Other Almanac, a publication inspired by the old Farmer’s Almanac, a longstanding American tradition🧑‍🌾

Living in New York, you can be so isolated from what’s happening in the rest of the world. But those who pay attention stay connected🗽

Whether it’s a little plant growing between the cracks of the sidewalk, endangered whales washing up on Rockaway Beach, pigeons getting up to something different this season, or frogs calling a tad differently🌱🐸🐋

The Other Almanac beautifully encapsulates the strange and the overlooked. The beauty right in front of us that so often goes unseen.

Edited by @anachron_ , with incredible contributions from journalists, farmers, astrologers, musicians, chefs, and artists, this is one publication that will keep you hooked throughout 2027🌻🌻

The Other Almanac, published by @orbooks, is out now.

Come grab a copy at Dépanneur. 📖

@or_books sends out monthly ORBITS with updates, stories, and small thoughts about what’s been happening at the office and with all of us. Here is mine from September.

A painting by @suecoeart

My mom and me.

A lamb my housemates and I rescued from a farm in college. His name was Lambuel but he grew up to be Ramuel. With @little.cat.official

Julian Assange and my dad.

Modeling his FMLN (guerrilla organization in El Salvador) bandana before I was born.

My dad holding my brother, Daniel Ortega (before we knew what a monster he’d become) holding me, and my mom at a party in our house.

She finally came around.

Christina and Katie helped come up with some of these. We’ve been friends for 31 years, and our shared love of—and intimate, visceral, inherent proximity to—organs is what’s kept us close all these years.

One of the ones in the Apple sticky note is a rooster, but maybe there’s a little rooster in all of us, too. Science has come a long way, but mysteries and unanswered questions remain.

Just as the deep sea and far space are mostly uncharted, we still don’t know what hides in the dark, wet ducts of our bodies.

Do you have an organ pun? Tell us in the comments below! by @anachron_

1. Picking young green black walnuts from a very old tree.
2. This is a young green black walnut.
3. I’ve been wanting to make nocino for years, but never get the walnuts in time. This is vodka, walnuts, allspice, coffee beans, pine needles, vanilla, anise, fennel, lemon peel.
4. Had enough to make a fermented walnut syrup. The flavor of the nocino becomes dark and herby after its year of soaking, but making a syrup helps preserve the fresh citrus-y taste of the green walnuts.
5. Swimming places.
6. Black cap raspberries all over the place.
7. More black walnuts, peach leaves, and gooseberries.
8. Gooseberry jam! Tart, sweet, red.
9. Making a shitty pine syrup because all the cones were too high up.
10. But after a big storm a lot of them fell into the driveway and after this photo I added them and will have a real muglio once it all ferments together (40 days).
11. Fermented honey, pine, tarragon soda.
12. Happy 250th anniversary Katie and Daniel.
13. We planted garlic in the fall and it’s ready to pull every year around July 4th.
14. This is 1/6 of what we grew.
15. Made some garlic scape olive oil.
16. Saw a bear at Mavi Mantar, perhaps an envoy of the Whurzel King himself.
17. Bottomless blueberries.
18. A bruise from a bug bite is a blueberry.
19. The person whose glasses these are and the person whose leg this is are getting married.

Thanks to @emergencemagazine and their Seeds of Radical Renewal Fellowship I got to find my first fasciated daisies. They (Emergence and the daisies) are one in a million (not literally, more like 1 in 100,000).

2. A big spiker
3. We all lived here thanks to @sharphamtrust
4. These flowers were the weeds that grew between stones and along the sides of roads.
5. The River Dart is tidal - this was low tide around midday. It rises and falls about six feet each day.
6. There it is again.
7. @jamesbridle talked to us about water and we built miniature landscapes to test terracing, water catchement, and land formed irrigation methods.
8. Sharpham from the outside.
9. Collected some allium and giant rhubarb seeds.
10. This makes it look like a relaxing time. It was not.
11. Sometimes I snuck off and ate berries in the garden feasting like a baby bear.
12. We explored the haunted attic complete with a bloody handprint on the wall.
13. Found a leaf that matched my @littleshopofhollies snail shirt.
14. Fasciation takes many forms. by @anachron_
