Something I have been working on over the last year and have been waiting eagerly to share: I had the absolute honour of working with @foliosociety on an illustrated edition of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass.
.
Braiding Sweetgrass is one of the most important pieces of writing of our times. We are living through a desperate climate crisis - record shattering global temperatures, floods, droughts, disappearing wildlife - driven by the perception of ourselves as THE dominant species, with a sense of entitlement, that the rest of the living world exists to serve us.
.
Robin Wall Kimmerer observes the natural world through a combined lens of botany and indigenous wisdom, embracing plants and animals as teachers and focusing on reciprocity. In many ways, this book is an antidote to these terribly fractious and unsettling times.
.
This is also a vulnerable moment for me as this is the first time I am sharing work in colour. 8 full colour reduction woodcuts. Excited, but also a bit nervous.
.
A special thank you to the most wonderful Mandy Kirkby for trusting me with this, Alfie Kimmins and every one at The folio Society.
.
Braiding Sweetgrass is out in the world today, as part of the folio society’s holiday collection. Please check out their website to browse through all the amazing titles as part of this collection!

Excited to share this piece I made for @newyorkermag 's fiction section, accompanying a passage from Kiran Desai's novel, The Loneliness of Sunny and Sonia, which has been longlisted for the Booker Prize!
.
It draws on the fractured identity of Sunny, an Indian man in New York, caught between cultures. Between longing and belonging. It follows his journey of trying to assimilate into America, as he finds himself tangled in what he most wishes to shed: his Indianness. But what he hopes to leave behind, is also what most defines him and holds him tightly.
.
Many thanks to @v.ctorguan for trusting me with this. 🙏🏾

Some very special news that I've been waiting to share. Over the last year, I have had the honour of working with @foliosociety on an illustrated edition of Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali. I'd always marveled at Folio Society books, harbouring a desire to work with them from afar. This coming to fruition, in the form of text by Tagore - a cultural godfather to the Indian subcontinent, that releases on Tagore's birth anniversary, is quite something. A remarkable alignment of stars.
.
Although Tagore became Asia's first recipient of the Noble prize in literature for Gitanjali, the sheer diversity of his work, and his contribution to Bengal and the subcontinent is immeasurable. He was a poet, a songwriter, composer, visual artist and a playwright. He was a philosopher and an educator who played an important role in laying the foundations of an independent India.
.
His poetry is virtually untranslatable. Behind the language, lies an intimidating cultural disparity. I felt an added sense of responsibility to try and communicate the secular, humanistic spirit within his words, which often gets misjudged, rather lazily, as sacred religious texts, both, in India and most definitely in the west.
.
This edition has an introduction by novelist, poet, and essayist extraordinaire, Amit chaudhuri as well as the original introduction by W.B. Yeats from 1913. I created 6 woodcut illustrations and the binding, printed with a lot of ❤️ at the SVA print shop that I will share in the coming days and weeks. Stay tuned!
.
A massive thank you to Art Director Raquel Leis Allison for trusting me with this and allowing me the freedom to explore Tagore's world.

Excited to share this piece I created for The New York Times Book Review, accompanying an essay by novelist, Christopher rice in response to the 50th anniversary of his mother, Anne Rice's novel, Interview with the Vampire. The book famously reshaped vampiric characters from blood thirsty evil villains to emotional beings, tortured by their own loneliness. The poignant essay shines a light on how Anne used a personal tragedy as fuel to craft this timeless novel.
.
Thank you so much AD @tonyadouraghy 🌸

We are thrilled to welcome Anagh Banerjee to the staff of the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program. A graduate of the program, Anagh returns as our much needed part time Studio Assistant. Anagh is a visual artist, originally from Bombay, India and currently based in Brooklyn. He graduated from the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program at SVA in 2018. His practice is rooted in printmaking with a particular focus on woodcuts. His work has been featured in major publications like The New Yorker, The New York Times, Penguin Random House, and the Folio Society. His work has also been showcased at venues such as the Brooklyn Public Library, the Evanston Art Center in Illinois, and SVA. Anagh continues to work on a deeply personal project about the Partition of the Indian subcontinent, which began as his MFA thesis. This ongoing series of woodblock prints documents first-hand accounts of the Partition, blending history and personal storytelling. #sva #svanyc #svanycalumni #mfaillustrationasvisualessaysva #art by @anaghbanerjee

Meant to post this earlier. But, hey, it's still early doors.

Made a little something for the @fifa worldcup. My artwork was chosen to be part of 'Already Home', a nationwide story telling campaign, in collaboration with @weareteamwonder , @maketheroadny y, in partnership with @nycmayor and @nycimmigrants

In a tournament, that has priced regular people and loyal fans out of attending the games, it is heartwarming to have been a part of a campaign that celebrates immigrants, stories of meaning, solidarity and community, that make the football worldcup the most magical event on the planet.

As part of this fan engagement initiative, visiting fans, New Yorkers, and the world cup attendees are encouraged to explore all five boroughs, pick up their NYC neighborhood passport, and collect artist created stamps at cultural institutions across the city. Each stamp designed by a NYC artist celebrates the diversity and the cultural range that represents NYC's magic. I am honoured to be one of 12 artists whose work was chosen for this campaign.

Many thanks to Betsy Maclean , @weareteamwonder and everyone who have made this possible. Congratulations to all the artists!
~

P.S. As for the worldcup itself, I am happy to clap for anyone who wins. All I want is for my @manutd boys to return for preseason without any injuries 😅

I had the pleasure of creating this piece to accompany Madhuri Vijay's story, 'Lara's theme' for the fiction section of this week's @newyorkermag .
.
It is a quiet, coming-of-age tale of fragilities, unfulfilled desires, and tensions within an Indian family, and how time, ultimately reshapes relationships.
.
"Buried within all families, perhaps, is the desire to self-destruct, to push intimacy to its ugliest extremes."
.
The saxophone is the most challenging thing I've ever drawn/carved. As graceful an object as it is, it has a very complicated architecture, one that I still can't say I understand. Thank you AD @sunshtine for your sharp eye and guidance!
.
(In case anyone is wondering; yes, I did add the cigarette smoke digitally)

This is the second illustration I created for Harper's Magazine's November issue featured with @davewingrave 's moving story, Aytaç, about a man returning to the village in Cyprus where he grew up, drawn by an old feud between two men he knew as a child.
.
So much fun making the chess pieces!
.
Thank you again @kathumphries for your sharp art direction! ♟️

Excited to share the first of two illustrations I created for Harper's magazine's November issue. They accompany @davewingrave 's poignant story, 'Aytaç', about a man returning to the village in Cyprus where he grew up, drawn by an old feud between two men he knew as a child.
.
It weaves together a rich mosaic of the personal and the historical, examining themes of memory, loss and the enduring impact of conflict on friendships.
.
Thank you so much for the excellent art direction, @kathumphries . So happy that we got to work together!
