A huge thank you to all the legends at @eastbelfastgaa for running a family fun day during the summer, raising £1500 for the collective, presenting us with a jersey that includes our name and ‘together’ in Arabic AND including us in their celebration day ❤️‍🔥✊🏽 by @anakacollective

Every young refugee and asylum seeker has their own story when it comes to attempting to access education, but we see the same themes cropping up in every case.

Delays, language barriers, isolation.

We need targeted education provision for newcomer children and young people that recognises their unique needs and provides a clear, tailored pathway into learning.

❗This week, our newsletter highlights the collective fight against racism and sectarianism across time and place.

For when it comes to racism and anti-racism, the past is seldom another country.

➡We draw attention to the escalation of far-right protests, on the South Coast of England, motivated by anti-migrant racism, as well as the trashing of Houses in Multiple Occupancy in Manchester.

➡But we have also extended our monitoring of the far-right and ultra-nationalist threat to include attempts by the Orange Order to reassert their right to dominate Catholic/ nationalist neighbourhoods by walking 'the king’s highway' from Drumcree church into the Catholic enclave on the Garvaghy Road in Portadown, County Armagh.

✊🏾 As the archives of militant struggle, which now includes Migrant Media’s documentary on the Bradford 12, prove, the 1980s and 1990s were periods when the children and grandchildren of former colonial subjects in England were under siege from the far Right in much the same way as their peers in Northern Ireland were under siege from the Orange Order.

At that time, there had been a shared understanding that colonial history and the roots of racism linked Irish, Black and Brown struggles.

📖 Read the full newsletter, ‘Unite against racism and sectarianism ‘ in our bio.

First slide: Blockade on the Garvarghy Road

The Orange Order’s attempt to parade down King’s Highway from Drumcree church into the Catholic enclave on the Garvaghy Road in Portadown, County Armagh was met with a mass sit-in and blockade by Catholic residents.

Second slide: ANAKA solidarity message

Following the racist pogrom in Northern Ireland this summer, Glór na Móna (@glornamona), an Irish-language youth and community organization based in West Belfast, wrote a solidarity message on the Black Mountain (Sliabh Dubh) on the summer solstice to support the ANAKA Collective (Anaka Women's Collective @anakacollective) against fascism and racism

A few weeks ago 10 bands and artists were invited by producer @darraghtibbsmusic to enter the cocoon if positive energy that is @analoguecatalogue to record the very first Old Town album entitled “The Old Town Project Vol. 1” This is a culmination of a Summer of resistance on behalf of the creatives of the North against the misuse of AI in the creative industries. It’s also an open invitation to artists everywhere to take of the cause and write their own Old Town. Mixed by @declanleggeproducer mastered by @joelharkin captured so beautifully by the best in the business @annalogue.jpeg . We can’t over state how life affirming it was to work with so many amazing people as house band for the session. The album is diverse and beautiful. We launch it on 7th November in @stjoesbelfast as part of @soundofbelfastfestival and all these artists will be there doing what we do best. All profits from this adventure will go to @anakacollective .There’s a ticket link in the bio. Please come down and enjoy being a human with us. #ThisOldTownIsReal @vera_theband @microtonalband @brendankerr_ @_evebelle_ @aquatofanamusic @thebonnevilles @dscullionmusic @corporalcormo @blackjackfranco @jaisianmusic @charliehanlon_ @chriskell3218 @jamesdoone @simontempleton1 @suzycoylemusic @i_am_the_matt taken in Analogue Catalogue Records by @anakacollective

Some of our young people spoke with Robbie Meredith at the BBC about the challenges they've faced navigating the education system here.

We are so proud of Mona, Hossam, Hani, and Sara for their courage to speak out, not only for themselves, but for all young asylum seeker and refugees facing the same barriers.

We published ‘Stranded Dreams’, proposing equal access to education for young people over a year ago, and reminded the NI Executive in an open letter last month... and so far all we have seen are more cuts! Please support our young people who are bravely speaking up for their rights by following the link in bio to substack and reading about our 16+ Education Equality campaign! by @anakacollective

Go raibh míle maith agaibh to everyone that joined us for the first screening of the new @scathancollective documentary exploring the work of Take Back the City & friends!!

The filmmakers have done an amazing job connecting the dots between homes on Mackie’s, community gardens, and the response to racist pogroms - keep an eye out for more screenings in future! 👀

Huge thanks to @glornamona for hosting it as part of Féile na Carraige, to our panelists for great discussions around the background of the film and where it came from, and to our Rasha for the delicious lunch! 🍛 by @anakacollective

Young people in Anaka 16+ continue to be excluded from our broken education system.

After we published our Stranded Dreams report last year, the NI Executive released its first ever 'Refugee Integration Strategy' - a hollow document with no commitments, no action, no strategy.

Since then we have watched as more young people age out of compulsory education. Nothing has changed, and if anything education provision for asylum seekers and refugees has gotten worse. With news of Belfast MET cutting ESOL enrolments for 2026-2027, we ask decision-makers to invest in this integration they speak of.

While young refugees and asylum seekers are denied access to the same education opportunities as everyone else, they are pushed further to the margins of society, and we all lose out on the incredible things they could accomplish.

📎Read our interview with BBC's Robbie Meredith in the link in our bio, and read more about our campaign for equal access to education on @anaka.education link in bio.

🎉 Celebrating One Year of DAR! ✊🏽❤️

One year ago, we held our very first meeting to bring an idea to life. Today, we’re proud to look back on a year of solidarity, community building, learning, and collective action.

Over the past year, we have:
🤝 Held 9 drop-in sessions, creating spaces for connection, support, and solidarity.
⚽ Organised 2 World Cup social events and participated in the Anti-Racism World Cup.
📢 Taken part in recruitment stalls to connect with more people and grow our community.
🗣️ Hosted our English Conversation Club and Music Club, bringing people together through language, culture, and shared experiences.
🌱 Organised training sessions for organisers and participated in CATU training, strengthening our skills and collective power.

None of this would have been possible without the people and organisations who have supported us along the way. A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed their time, energy, ideas, and solidarity to help DAR grow. Special thanks to our friends and partners at CATU, the Anti-Racism World Cup, Anaka, and PPR. ❤️

A special thank you to the Anti-Racism World Cup for generously donating the money raised at the tournament to DAR. Your support means a great deal to us and helps us continue building our community and working towards a more inclusive and supportive society. ❤️⚽

As Osama said at our very first meeting:

“Men standing by each other, with each other, for each other.”

These words capture the spirit of what we are building: a community rooted in mutual support, solidarity, and collective action.

One year down, and we’re only getting started. Here’s to everything we’ve achieved together, the relationships we’ve built, and the work still ahead of us.

Together, we stand stronger. ✊🏽

Our 16+ group had an amazing evening exploring the colourful world of @beatcarnival 🎊🥁🎋

We had a chance to venture into their warehouse of parade floats, made some noise with @beatndrum samba band, and began workshopping some ideas for our very own 16+ banner! Thank you so much to the Beat family for having us along ❤️ #theartsareforeveryone by @anakacollective
