I wrote this article because this movement belongs to the people of Iran. It is not foreign-led, not orchestrated, and not a political game. It is the voice of ordinary people who have reached a breaking point and are demanding dignity, freedom, and the right to determine their own future.

Iranians are risking their lives every day. They are being arrested, tortured, and killed by a theocratic dictatorship. Thousands have already lost their lives, and countless families are living with grief, fear, and silence.

When false narratives claim this movement is driven by outside forces, it erases the sacrifice of those who have died and those who continue to stand bravely in the streets.

I wrote this piece to honour their voices and help tell their story truthfully, and to share the vision Iranians hold for a future where their country can live in peace with its neighbours and the wider region.

For years, we have advocated for political prisoners to be released and for executions in Iran to end immediately.

But we also understand that these atrocities are not isolated excesses of a system capable of reform. Imprisonment, torture and execution are the very mechanisms through which the Islamic Republic maintains power.

Calling for prisoners to be freed is an urgent demand but freedom cannot mean releasing people back into the same society where they can be monitored, threatened, rearrested or executed for continuing to oppose the regime.

Calling for an end to executions is essential but executions will not end permanently while the state continues to rely on fear and death for its survival.

We demand the immediate release of political prisoners and an immediate end to executions while recognising that lasting freedom, safety and justice can only be achieved when the Islamic Republic is removed.

Every time I think I’ve turned a corner, the wave of grief hits me and I crash again. I close my eyes and I see him, his voice in my head saying nothing in particular, his spirit sitting in his favourite spot on my couch. The pain of knowing I will never see him, hear him, kiss him or hug him again breaks my heart.
