Sometimes, telling someone to completely avoid a movement because it causes pain can accidentally teach them something more harmful: “This movement is dangerous.”

And the less you do a movement, the less capable you may become at doing it.

Now, to be clear: there are absolutely situations where a movement may need to be modified or avoided temporarily based on someone’s diagnosis, symptoms, stage of recovery, or specific clinical findings.

The concern is when a temporary precaution becomes a long-term fear of movement.

The goal of physiotherapy isn’t to make you afraid of movement. It’s to help you understand your body, manage your symptoms, and gradually build the strength, mobility and confidence to do the things you actually need to do.

Touching your toes isn’t inherently bad.
Pain doesn’t automatically mean damage.
And avoiding movement forever isn’t the same as recovering.
